i remember shawn ray saying he purposely undertrained his legs his entire career because they could easily get too big for his body. 

Phil just builds every muscle group to its max, regardless of symmetry.  And the judging standards reward it, so it will not change.  The top 2-4 are the biggest.   it's a mass sport.  When lean, perfectly symmetrical guys start winning, phil will scale down 15 pounds and try that.  But as long as he's winning, why change a thing?

Yep good point. Phil is technically the best onstage but he sacrifices flow and symmetry in the process. If Phil had wider clavicles it would make a huge difference to his look. Unfortunately there is not much he can do about that. Still props to him for winning his 6th.

BE THERE, With much respect I have to say that you are wrong by stating  that "The Mr Universe contest is a household name everywhere."

That may possibly be true outside of the USA and you must reside someplace outside to the good old USA to be familiar with that contest.

The Mr Universe title used to be famous here in the USA until around the 1980's but I can assure you that any of today's GetBiggers who reside within the USA (outside of Tim Fogarty and a couple of other GetBiggers have no idea who won the Mr. Universe title within the past 10-15 years unless they first became popular within the IFBB or even possibly the NPC.

But it would be interesting to see how many GetBiggers even know anything about the Mr Universe, who sanctions it, and where it is held each year. Plus one of two of the title holders over the past ten years.

I will always admit if I could be wrong so it will be interesting to see how many USA GetBiggers are familiar with the Mr Universe.

As long as he wears the robot costume. That's when bodybuilding still had some life. I don't know if anyone remembers when he and Craig Titus were going at it and then they did a show together. The judges called them out and they spent the comparisons screaming their heads off. The other guys on stage were dying laughing. It truly was one of the funniest things I've ever seen happen on stage

The only Thing we had  last night was watching Ramy clap and get excited during the call outs.

I do want someone to punch Rhoden in the face and see if that wakes him up.

He turns his legs out so you can see the calves too. I'm not a Heath fan but I'm also not a hater for the sake of hating like 80% of this board.  He is a more complete bodybuilder than anyone in history.  He has calves, forearms, incredible back.... Ronnie had no calves and weird midsection,  Dorian had small arms compared to the rest of his body (and he's my favourite bodybuilder ever).  What fill lacks is that wideness that Ronnie had and the deep deep cuts like Dorian had that made him look vacuum packed, other than that no flaws.  If he was as wide as Ronnie with those same muscle bodies it would be 'lights out' even for Ronnie.

After winning the Olympia Haney never again competed in any other show.

In fact I think he won the 83 NOC and after that only ever did the Olympia (starting with his 3rd place in that same year).

We don't like Phil because 1) he looks pretty shit, and 2) he acts like an unlikeable douche.

A lot of interesting comments from a few GetBiggers here.

And my response is pretty basic shit which I think is being overlooked here.

Most notably is the general dislike of Phil Heath and the physique he displayed at this year's Olympia.

But all the attendees I've spoken to claim that Phil actually did deserve that 1st place trophy

And those claims were made according to numerous individuals who had their asses in the Orleans Audirorium and witnessed the event.

But Phil's win nor physique does not appear to satisfy most GetBiggers.

Now this is really BASIC .....If each and every contender on that stage was in miserable shape, the contender who was the one individual who was "least in miserable shape".... would get the trophy.

And for many GetBiggers this seems to have been the main objection/problem this time out.

(Phil .... looking miserable ... was the least looking miserable contender on that stage.)

And you have to realize that the determination of who gets what in a bodybuilding  contest is a a matter of comparing each contender on that stage with the other contenders on that stage.

If all are ugly, the winner will be the individual who is less ugly.

It really ain't rocket science nor it it quantum mechanics. It's just a bodybuilding contest!

And although one may feel that Heath is not a good Olympian, it just so happens that he was the BEST olympian contender in that line-up on that particular evening .... even though his physique does not meet one's standards of what a winning Olympian should look like.

Way too insightful for the masses. Most forums on the internet can't see the forest for the trees, which may be the whole point of forums.

KANNIBAL and MACWAY and a couple of others whom I have forgotten have said it best in my humble opinion......

The Olympia and every other bodybuilding contest held worldwide is far from 'death'.

It remains to be one of the most profitable money-makers within the bodybuilding world with an estimated 50,000 worldwide fans attending the Olympia Expo each and every year.

And as MACWAY so 'eloquently' stated .... It will never go away!

Even 'way back when' before the internet came to birth many people who never  even heard of bodybuilding contests were saying that it would never be a popular event.

Those were the original 'haters' way back then and since things continue to NEVER change, the haters are saying the same today .... but in larger numbers simply due to easy access to the internet.

But the NPC/IFBB has been listening and observing and made some  changes which just might possibly get the haters to mellow out a bit.

So far those changes have been the addition of Physique and Classic Physique which have been drawing contenders by the thousands

And I do agree with a few other GetBiggers that those changes are going to make a great improvement in acceptance throughout the world and eventually grow in popularity.

Possibly even surpassing the present day popularity of the Olympia which most every US citizen never heard of way back when.

In general I gotta agree with what MACWAY stated up above. He shows 'smarts'.

And so do a few others whose names I have forgotten.

But those who forecast the death of the Olympia and bodybuilding events in general have little knowledge of what's currently happening or are simply walking around with blinders on.

Good post. After attending last year, I think the rock and his ex wife's company getting involved will take things to the next level.

I just think it's interesting if you gave people who had no clue about bodybuilding the lineup and said which one is mr Olympia you would get varying answers and that's why I think like all pageants they should have some non bodybuilding people on the judging panel. It's not like these so called bodybuilding judges can get it right either.

The reason it's exploded in popularity is because people think anyone can do it and they can't. They're not supposed to just like everyone can't be a track star or basketball player

Im talking about people outside bodybuilding, the general public.
When I started weight training all the old guys at work used to say, "fucking hell, here comes Mr Universe", it is a familiar name to a lot of the public
No one outside bodybuilding knows what MR Olympia is, and they never will.
