It is a straight up embarrassment to be paying pretty much any amount of money for someone to sign something.

I don't begrudge people doing it, but I do feel incredibly sorry for them that they would lower themselves to rating their time earning that money so low.  I think as soon as you do that, you're fucked - you're excepting mediocrity.

There are exceptions of course.. things like gestures for kids, where you're just doing something extraordinary but not if you're a regular person with a decent head on your shoulders and you're just saying "I worked an 1-20 hours for this money and now you can have it for a 30 second encounter" with someone.. not good.

I'm sure many of these actors are very nice people but there is no way in my mind that Chris Evans isn't an utter asshole for pulling 350k for signing pieces of paper for people.  To me that is an incredible exploitation.  I mean, why 350K? who the fuck needs to pull 350k from people with regular jobs in a weekend?  You half your price and you still walk away with 175k and literally thousands of man hours are saved of people's time.

Everybody has the right to earn a living but this is unique situation where people who are in a privileged position are directly fucking their fans.  Has beens are less wrong in my mind (ie typecast Star Trek actors) - but when true A list stars doing this shit.. fucking assholes - end of story.  I can't think of ANY sporting star who charges to write their name on a piece of paper.  Just actors ::)

Just my 2 cents.

I've never paid for an autograph and one of these, or even for a pic, and probably never will. But I've only been to the Fan Expo for the first time this year, here in Toronto. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it! Definitely going next year, and actually thinking of dressing up. As any good getbigger, I will diet down and go as Superman or something a bit more ghey (Peter Pan? - actually saw a guy dressed up as Peter Pan there. Almost felt bad for the poor kid).

With SOME shows I don't have to pay for their pics/autographs, thankfully! :D

But some of the prices are downright ridiculous: Lee Majors, for instance, is $45 or $50 for a photo (same with William Shatner)...and THEN it's another $45-$50 just to take it back to their table to have that photo autographed!  So that's $90-$100 a pop, essentially.

I went with a friend of mine and his friend was our "guide" since it was both of our first times, but my buddy's friend is a comic freak. He paid $100 for a pic with Adam West in front of a bat mobile. Didn't even get it signed, it would've cost more for that. Ridiculous.

Good for you.  Haven't seen you begging us for money lately so things must really be looking up.

A lot of these "old timer" celebs are able to charge that much because there is still a huge fan base in the older generations.  That, and the fact that these guys don't have many years left in them are the reasons why they still bank at these shows.

I was shocked at how good some of the cosplays were! Not the "professionals" those were alright. But the amateurs did an incredible job. My favorite was a group that did spaceballs. I'll post up a pic if I can find it on my phone.

I posted a couple mos ago when at Pittsburgh comicon Lou wanted $40. I have an original movie theatre poster of Hercules. When I showed him that he said $80. Ridiculous. I was going to hang it at the brickyard. Then I was going to YouTube me burning his poster. Also I posted it right after he said that at the show. Someone posted back his autograph that sold for a whopping $9 on eBay. The thread is here somewhere. Retarded.

While I agree with your sentiments, virtually all retired athletes who appear at events charge to sign. Little known MLBers are charging $50 to sign cards, $200 for bats and gloves. Pete Rose makes more than $1M/year doing nothing but signing his name.

Writing autographs at obscure festivals is the only thing keeping some of these dinosaurs relevant and they still have the guts to charge money for it. Scumbags the lot of them!  >:(

It's basic supply and demand principles. If no one gave a shit about autographs, all of these washed-up has-beens would be collecting food stamps.

Yes and that's what makes me mad about it, they use older guys sentimental nostalgia as a leverage to force payment. Basically milking people just because they know they can get away with it. As stated earlier in the thread, the second hand value is close to zero as these scumbags are still drawing breath and churning out signed photos like a Pakistani sweatshop churns out FIFA footballs. They live off the goodwill of nostalgic middle aged white men (demographic group with most money).
