strength carryover (leg press v. squat)
« on: March 29, 2006, 06:58:26 PM »

For example my squat sucks, I can only get 405 for 12 or so reps yet 900 for 12-15 is no problem on an inclined leg press.  Why the big difference?  Granted I've had some issues with the lower back...but I'd rather have a big squat.  No one cares how much you leg press anyway.

uh.....are you serious?

the leg press is at a 45 degree angle, so you're not absorbing all that weight yourself.  much of it is being transfered through the machine rails and into the ground.  for example if the sled was only at a 25 degree angle, it would get even lighter.  and if it were parallel with the ground it would be almost effortless to push....and if it were at a 90 degree angle (the weight above you) you would be pushing against every pound.

get it?
its comin today

the part of his squat that sucks is his ROM, probably 1/4 to 1/8 I'm guessing.

If I'm wrong and you are doing parallel or ATG at that weight I'm very impressed, that is an awesome lift and you should be proud unless you weigh 300 or sth.

That should show you that the squat calls into play the upper body almost as much as the legs/hips and how important the lower and upper back (as well as the abs) are to the movement. With the leg press the hips, back and the rest of the body are supported greatly, the more focus is on the lower body. Not so when squating.  More muscle involvement when squating requires more balance & force/energy from the whole body when the workload (weight) is placed on the shoulders. Squats are harder to do because of that. If you want to increase the power of your squat than include GM'ing in workouts with heavy ab movements. Might want to also add some heavy partial reps to a lockout position or try dead stop starts at the bottom pin position.

Don't know what your bwt is but 405 is good for the 12 reps. Though it's not always a good idea to get caught up in numbers if BB'ing and adding muscle mass is the prime goal. Good Luck.

actually I am at the same levels on both lifts.... I do not see a problem..however i could go heavier on the squat but I have a bulging disk so i never go over 405... my 2 cents

Obvious case of "RETARD STRENGTH"

But if you aren't going to at least parallel, you're just RETAAA-DIT.
