I loved the Vert.  So comformtable.  I always imagined if I got under a car I could lift it.  They were big back in the 70's and early 80's

that's the OLD leg press. nobody does them any more cause they're much better with the new machine that's 45 degree angled. some say the invention of the better leg press machine is one of the factors of leg improvement in bodybuilding.

never seen that device in my entire life

They went out with the hula hoop and roller skates..........Arnold only trained legs on the vertical leg press for the 1980 Mr. O-and only used 400# for reps.......

My buddy Hurricane BEEF! still uses this device with his Hammer Strength and Nautilus equipment.

Pretty old school device.

Only problem is....you fail the lift.....good luck getting out from it.

They're still around.  There was a fairly new one at the college weight room I used to train in.

They still have one at Diamond Gym in New Jersey. Can't say I've seen it used very often in recent years. Diamond is probably one of the few old-school gym, hardcore gyms left.

FWIW, The exact vertical leg press Arnold is using in the photo, was at Gold's Venice for many years. Good piece... old school but good. I'm pretty sure it went to Gold's Las Vegas in 97'-98'? I think it had a little plaque on it that mentioned it's history.

If you actually watch Ronnie's new video "On the Road" he actually uses one of those in australia! Funkiest piece of equipment, and how it works, I've ever seen.

What's funnier though is the fact that Ronnie couldn't even fit in the machine properly :o

Yeah, they still make those things; the owner of the gym i'm at ordered one last year (don't know why, no one ever uses it.  Lost money on that one.) Ya can only bring it down to a certain point so at least you won't get crushed under it.

I've used one of those original style leg press machines years ago. Not the smoothest in the world but still functional. Sprayed a little WD40, or other forms of lubrications, for a better mental on mental action. You twist those side stops and the wood foot platform (the one I used was a wood platform) only goes down so far. There is a wedge shaped support for the back but we also placed folded up moving pads on top of it for better bracing of the back. Used it also for tricep (close hand positions) bench presses and some times inclines, not bad really. Can do tricep extensions to. Did seated military press on it for a different feel. Can only get so many plates on it so I did a lot of one legged presses.  Can also do calf raises (reversed). Good Luck.

I used to love doing those. The first time I tried one was around 1977. Used the shit out of one in the early mid 80's too, till' the gym sold. Had all the original equipment that gold's did back in the day( same maker) great stuff. Better than any of the new stuff imo.

My gym has a new version of this machine.  It's excellent - seems to be easier on the knees than the 45 degree version.  I seem to remember reading that Vince Taylor is big on these.

what's nice about the VERT is that because the weight is at 90 degrees to the floor you are lifting 100% OF THE WEIGH... basically it's the same as a seated leg press but you spend less time loading and unloading 8)
