I had chronic low back problems, a therapist said it was all in stretching out the hams, not working the low back so much. So yes reverse hypers, you can do them lying on a high bench with just your leg weight, but I just do regular hyperextensions with bodyweight and i'm not having back problems. Focus on stretching out those hams at the bottom. and/or use a rope to stretch your hams one leg at a time while lying on your back. It all works.
