South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham, 68, spent four months unsuccessfully fighting against his subpoena to testify in front of a Georgia grand jury investigating alleged election interference by the former president.

The congressman, who even took his challenge to the US Supreme Court, could have refused to answer questions by invoking his right against self-incrimination under the Constitution’s Fifth Amendment.

Instead, he reportedly “turned on a dime ‘and threw Trump under the bus’” in the Fulton County case, according to a new book about the prosecution.

During his secret grand jury testimony, Mr Graham said if you told Mr Trump “that Martians came and stole the election, he’d probably believe you”, Michael Isikoff and Daniel Klaidman claim in Find Me the Votes: A Hard-Charging Georgia Prosecutor, a Rogue President, and the Plot to Steal an American Election.

According to an excerpt obtained by Politico, Mr Graham also suggested that the former president “cheated at golf”.

Mr Graham has often gushed about Mr Trump’s golfing prowess. In 2017, he claimed Mr Trump had “shot a 73 in windy and wet conditions!”, a result so impressive it was questioned by Golf magazine.

He also said of the Republican frontrunner for this year’s presidential election: “Donald Trump on the golf course is a very charming, gracious man. Very funny. Very competitive, but gracious.”

Following his November 2022 testimony, Mr Graham is also said to have embraced and thanked Fani Willis, the Fulton County district attorney who is heading the investigation into Mr Trump.

“After Graham was finished testifying, he bumped into Fani Willis in a hallway and thanked her for the opportunity to tell his story,” the book states.

“That was so cathartic,” he reportedly said, adding: “I feel so much better.”

“Then, to the astonishment of one source who witnessed the scene, South Carolina’s senior senator hugged the Fulton County DA who was aggressively pursuing Trump,” the book states.

A witness claimed Ms Willis’s response “was like ‘whatever, dude’”.
