Obama Reportedly Told a Dem Candidate that Joe Biden ‘Really Doesn’t Have’ Bond With Voters




A new report on former President Barack Obama suggests the former president doesn’t have faith in Joe Biden’s chances to connect with voters in states, like Iowa, that made his 2008 campaign successful.

Politico’s Ryan Lizza reported on the 2020 Democratic candidates who met Obama at his office in D.C. this year, seeking his advice on how to win the White House. Lizza reported that as Obama provided advice to the candidates who met with him, it also gave him a chance to learn about them so he and his advisers can figure out who is the most likely person to defeat President Donald Trump.

Here are some of Obama’s biggest takeaways so far, per Lizza:

“Sometimes he offers candid advice about his visitors’ strengths and weaknesses. With several lesser-known candidates, according to people who have talked to him or been briefed on his meetings, he was blunt about the challenges of breaking out of a large field. His advice is not always heeded. He told Patrick earlier this year that it was likely “too late” for him to secure “money and talent” if he jumped in the race. Occasionally, he can be cutting. With one candidate, he pointed out that during his own 2008 campaign, he had an intimate bond with the electorate, especially in Iowa, that he no longer has. Then he added, “And you know who really doesn’t have it? Joe Biden.”

The piece also reported that while many Democratic hopefuls met with Obama over the last few months, Biden was not among them. The significance of this is debatable though since the article notes that “as a rule of thumb, the closer one is to Obama personally, the less important the West End summit is.” Joe Biden, one of only two candidates who Obama knows at a familial, rather than strictly professional level, was an ‘exception.'”

Obama privately said he would speak up to stop Sanders: report



President Obama privately said he would speak up to stop Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) from becoming the Democratic presidential nominee, Politico reported Tuesday.

The former president reportedly said if Sanders held a strong lead in the Democratic primary, he would speak out to prevent him from becoming the nominee.  

A close adviser to Obama told Politico he could not confirm whether Obama would stand up against Sanders.

“He hasn’t said that directly to me,” the adviser said. “The only reason I'm hesitating at all is because, yeah, if Bernie were running away with it, I think maybe we would all have to say something. But I don't think that's likely. It's not happening.”

An Obama spokesperson, when asked about his previous comments on Sanders, referred to the president’s past comments that he would back whomever became the Democratic nominee.

“Look, we have a field of very accomplished, very serious and passionate and smart people who have a history of public service, and whoever emerges from the primary process I will work my tail off to make sure that they are the next president,” Obama said earlier this month, according to his spokesperson.

Obama has stayed quiet throughout the campaign about which candidate he would support, but has offered to meet with any candidate in the primary and has given advice to those who meet with him, according to the news outlet.

A close adviser told Politico that “I can’t even imagine with this field how bad it would have to be for him to say something,” referring to Obama speaking out against a candidate.

But earlier this month, the former president warned the 2020 candidates of leaning too far left at a speaking engagement, saying “the average American doesn’t think we have to completely tear down the system and remake it.”

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s late entry into the presidential race highlights the deep philosophical divide animating the Democratic contest – putting his experience, his reputation and his fortune behind the argument that a pragmatic centrist pledging competent government is what’s needed to take down an unconventional president.

With no clear front-runner in the Democratic race so far, Bloomberg says he wants to fill this vacuum by offering primary voters a credible alternative – and a clear choice to go down a path of moderate views on taxes and health care, at a time there’s concern in the party that advocating policies deemed too far left will only ensure President Donald Trump’s re-election.

“I offer myself as a doer and a problem solver – not a talker,” Bloomberg said in announcing his candidacy, where he called Trump “an existential threat to our country and our values.”

Bloomberg also cited his efforts to rebuild New York after the Sept. 11 attacks and his efforts in favor of gun control and against climate change and tobacco use. "I believe my unique set of experiences in business, government and philanthropy will enable me to win and lead."

Bloomberg’s entry into the race comes on the heels of fears expressed by both former President Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that Democrats risk handing the election to Trump by proposing sweeping changes like Medicare for All. Bloomberg said in January the plan, which would effectively curtail private insurance, “would bankrupt us for a very long time.”

The question Bloomberg will face is whether a 77-year-old billionaire and former Republican is the right candidate to carry that message as the Democratic nominee. Bloomberg has added another layer of complications, saying he doesn’t plan to compete in the early nominating contests like Iowa and New Hampshire and will focus on delegate-rich California and other states voting on the March 3 Super Tuesday contests and beyond.

No one has ever won that way, Democratic strategists and experts say -- but also say that no one like Bloomberg has been able to spend what it takes to run a national campaign to amass the needed delegates.

After Buttigieg's Past Comments on Race and Education Goes Viral, Mayor Phones Op-ed Author Who Called Him 'A Lying MF'



South Bend, Indiana Mayor and Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg phoned columnist Michael Harriot this week to discuss an article he had written. In the op-ed, Harriot called Buttigieg a "lying MF" over remarks the candidate once made about minorities and education.

Harriot, a senior writer for The Root, took issue with the assertion Buttigieg made during his mayoral campaign in 2011 that many minority children have not seen the payoff from education.

"Kids need to see evidence that education is going to work for them," Buttigieg said. "You're motivated because you believe that at the end of your education, there is a reward; there's a stable life; there's a job. And there are a lot of kids—especially [in] the lower-income, minority neighborhoods, who literally just haven't seen it work. There isn't someone who they know personally who testifies to the value of education."

That statement caused Harriot to call Buttigieg a liar in his article, citing reports that majority-minority schools receive billions less in funding. Black students were also found to be more harshly disciplined.

"This is not just a lie of omission, it is a dangerous precedent. This is why institutional inequality persists," Harriot wrote. "Not because of white hoods and racial slurs. It is because this insidious double-talk erases the problem by camouflaging it. Because it is painted as a problem of black lethargy and not white apathy."

After Harriot's article went viral, Buttigeig called him on the phone saying, "I don't think I've ever been called a 'lying motherf***er before.'"

He’s got a seemingly unlimited supply of campaign cash and Michael Bloomberg is throwing it around — the multibillionaire just hired away one of his Democratic rivals’ top staffers.

Bloomberg hired Kelly Mehlenbacher, who had worked in operations for California Sen. Kamala Harris’ 2020 presidential campaign. She will be joining Team Bloomberg as its deputy chief operating officer, a Bloomberg spokesperson confirmed Thursday.

Mehlenbacher’s move comes following recent staff shakeups — including layoffs — at Harris’ sagging campaign as the only black woman in the race shifts her immediate focus to trying to win Iowa.

The political operative was among a group of staffers who recently quit Harris’ team following the latest series of layoffs there, according to Politico, which first reported the Bloomberg hire.

Mehlenbacher’s long resume also includes working as the treasury manager for Hillary Clinton’s failed 2016 presidential bid.

Although Bloomberg’s campaign wouldn’t address how much the ex-New York City mayor, who is worth an estimated $54 billion, will be paying Mehlenbacher, the deep-pocketed media mogul is already sparing no expense when it comes to his campaign.

Bloomberg is throwing another $9.5 million into television ads in major markets like Los Angeles and Houston less than a week after purchasing $30 million in spots to launch his 2020 bid.

Biden Kicks Off 'No Malarkey' Tour By Lying About Meeting Kim Jong-un




Former Vice President Joe Biden kicked off his “No Malarkey” tour of Iowa over the weekend by lying about having “spent a lot of time” with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Biden, who has been known to embellish portions of his personal and political life on the campaign trail, flubbed the nature of his relationship withthe North Korean strongman on Sunday at a town hall in Carroll, Iowa. The event, part of Biden’s highly publicized 18-county “No Malarkey” bus tour of Iowa, was supposed to showcase the former vice president’s candor and authenticity as he tries to mount a comeback in the first caucus state—much like John McCain’s ‘Straight Talk Express’ did in New Hampshire during the 2008 election.

As such, Biden opened up with the audience in Carroll about the draining toll of the presidency and the importance of Democrats nominating a candidate in 2020 who would not need on the job training.

The 77-year-old Biden told those assembled, “You’re going to have assume that position the moment they are sworn in, in January 2020, and know the rest of the world knows that person, in this case me, and that I know them,”

Biden went on to say Russian President:

    Putin has no illusions about whether I know him or not, Kim Jong Un has no person that I don’t know or not, the same with the president of China, Xi Jinping, I spent a lot of time with these folks. They know, they know.

Despite touting his readiness and familiarity with the foreign heads of state, Biden, in fact, had never met all those leaders he invoked in Iowa. Although the former vice president interacted with both Putin and Xi Jinping on numerous occasions throughout the Obama administration, his claims to have spent time with Kim Jong-un have no basis. A review of Biden’s public schedules from the Obama-era White House indicate no meeting between the two men ever took place.

Biden’s inaccurate comments about having “spent a lot of time” with the North Korean leader elicited rebuke from members of the Trump campaign on social media.
