Elizabeth Warren: Let's Cancel Student Loan Debt And Make College Free

student loan debt. Today, according to personal finance site Make Lemonade, student loan debt is now the second highest consumer debt category – second only to mortgages and higher than credit card debt and auto loans. By 2023, 40% of student loan borrowers may default on their student loans.

Specifically, Warren’s plan for student loan debt forgiveness would:

Cancel $50,000 in student loan debt for every person with household income under $100,000.
Provide substantial debt cancellation for every person with household income between $100,000 and $250,000.
Not tax as income student loan debt that has been cancelled.
Also make private student loan debt eligible for cancellation.
Streamline the student loan debt forgiveness process using data and income information already available to the federal government.

Importantly, Warren’s plan offers no student loan debt cancellation to borrowers with a household income above $250,000, which she says is the Top 5% of earners. There would also be “phase-outs” based on income. The $50,000 cancellation amount would phase out by $1 for every $3 in income above $100,000. According to Warren, for example, “a person with household income of $130,000 gets $40,000 in cancellation, while a person with household income of $160,000 gets $30,000 in cancellation.”

Proposal: Make College Tuition-Free

Specifically, Warren’s plan for  universal free college would: “Give every American the opportunity to attend a two-year or four-year public college without paying a dime in tuition or fees.” Warren proposes that the federal government and states split the cost of tuition and fees, without impact to “need-based financial aid or academic instruction.”

“Student loan debt is crushing millions of families,” Warren tweeted. “That’s why I’m calling for something truly transformational: Universal free college and the cancellation of debt for more than 95% of Americans with student loan debt.” In a separate tweet, Warren wrote: “This is the kind of big, structural change we need to make sure our kids have opportunity in this country.”

I'm glad that some of you think Portland is not all that great.  Many others apparently disagree. Many of of these folks move to the Portland Metro area each year. However, as the cost of living has increased, population growth here is slower. The metro area grew by just over 30,000 residents in the year that ended July 1, according to the Census Bureau. That's a population increase of about 1.2 percent, or 578 people a week -- the region's slowest growth since 2013.

BTW, I am not currently a Portland resident, nor have I been since 1985. To be honest, I don't give a rip what you think about the quality of life in Portland.

Biden launches 2020 bid warning ‘soul’ of America at stake
By STEVE PEOPLES and THOMAS BEAUMONT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Vice President Joe Biden formally joined the crowded Democratic presidential contest on Thursday, declaring the “soul of this nation” at stake if President Donald Trump wins re-election.

In a video posted on Twitter , Biden focused on the 2017 deadly clash between white supremacists and counter protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia. Biden noted Trump’s comments that there were some “very fine people” on both sides of the violent encounter, which left one woman dead.

“We are in the battle for the soul of this nation,” Biden said. “If we give Donald Trump eight years in the White House, he will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation — who we are. And I cannot stand by and watch that happen.”

The 76-year-old Biden becomes an instant front-runner alongside Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is leading many polls and has proved to be a successful fundraiser . Biden has legislative and international experience that is unmatched in the Democratic field , and he is among the best-known faces in U.S. politics.

Hours after former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden launched his presidential bid he briefly spoke to reporters at Wilmington's Amtrak station.

He quickly racked up endorsements on Thursday morning, becoming the first Democrat running for president with the backing of more than one U.S. senator.

Still, Biden must compete in a field that now spans at least 20 Democrats and has been celebrated for its racial and gender diversity. As an older white man with occasionally centrist views, Biden has to prove he’s not out of step with his party. He’s yet to outline his positions on the issues defining the 2020 Democratic primary, most notably “Medicare for All,” the universal health care plan authored by Sanders that has been adopted by virtually the entire Democratic field.

His critics in both major political parties were also quick to pounce.

“The old guard of the Democratic Party failed to stop Trump, and they can’t be counted on to lead the fight against his divide-and-conquer politics today,” the liberal group Justice Democrats tweeted. “The party needs new leadership with a bold vision capable of energizing voters in the Democratic base who stayed home in 2016.”

Biden, a native of Scranton, Pennsylvania, is betting that his working class appeal and ties to Barack Obama’s presidency will help him win over such skeptics. Obama has declined to endorse Biden, however, and several former Obama aides are now working for other candidates.

“I asked President Obama not to endorse,” Biden told reporters as he arrived in Delaware Thursday. “Whoever wins this nomination should win it on their own merits.”

While he hasn’t endorsed anyone in the crowded field, Obama took the unusual step of weighing in on Thursday’s announcement.

“President Obama has long said that selecting Joe Biden as his running mate in 2008 was one of the best decisions he ever made,” Obama spokeswoman Katie Hill said. “He relied on the vice president’s knowledge, insight, and judgment throughout both campaigns and the entire presidency. The two forged a special bond over the last 10 years and remain close today.”

Trump welcomed Biden to the campaign in a tweet calling him “Sleepy Joe.”

“I only hope you have the intelligence, long in doubt, to wage a successful primary campaign,” Trump said. “It will be nasty - you will be dealing with people who truly have some very sick & demented ideas. But if you make it, I will see you at the Starting Gate.”

Privately, Trump allies have warned that Biden might be the biggest re-election threat given the former vice president’s potential appeal among the white working class in the Midwest, the region that gave Trump a path to the presidency.

Biden is paying special attention to his native Pennsylvania, a state that swung to Trump in 2016 after voting for Democratic presidential candidates for decades. While Biden represented Delaware in the Senate for 36 years, he was often referred to as Pennsylvania’s third senator.

The former vice president will be in the state three times within the opening weeks of his campaign. He’ll be in Philadelphia on Thursday evening headlining a fundraiser at the home of David L. Cohen, executive senior vice president of Comcast. Biden is aiming to raise $500,000 at the event.

He will hold his first public event as a 2020 presidential candidate in Pittsburgh on Monday. Then it’s off to Iowa, home of the leadoff nominating caucuses on Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by two days in South Carolina. He’ll visit the other two early-voting states, Nevada and New Hampshire, in early May, before holding a major rally in Philadelphia.

Biden’s first media appearance is set for Friday morning on ABC’s “The View,” a move that may help him make an appeal to women whose support will be crucial to winning the primary. He also hired Symone Sanders to serve as a senior strategist, tapping a prominent African American who previously worked for Biden’s chief competitor, Bernie Sanders, in the 2016 presidential contest.

As he neared his campaign launch, Biden’s challenges have come into greater focus.

He struggled last month to respond to claims that he touched 2014 Nevada lieutenant governor nominee Lucy Flores’ shoulders and kissed the back of her head before a fall campaign event. A handful of other women have made similar claims, though none has alleged sexual misconduct.

Biden, a former U.S. senator from Delaware, pledged in an online video to be “much more mindful” of respecting personal space but joked two days later that he “had permission” to hug a male union leader before addressing the group’s national conference.

Biden also has been repeatedly forced to explain his 1991 decision, as Senate Judiciary Committee chairman, to allow Anita Hill to face difficult questions from an all-male panel about allegations of sexual harassment against Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, who later was confirmed to the high court.

He has since apologized for his role in the hearing. But in the #MeToo era, particularly after the contentious confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, the episode remains a significant political liability.

Likewise, Biden once played a key role in anti-crime legislation that had a disproportionately negative impact on African Americans. And while several 2020 Democratic contenders have embraced the possibility of reparations to African Americans for slavery in recent weeks, Biden last month struggled to explain comments he made as a freshman senator in 1975 about the school busing debate.

His first White House bid in 1988 ended after a plagiarism scandal. He dropped out of the 2008 race after earning less than 1% of the vote in the Iowa caucuses. Later that year, Obama named Biden as his running mate.

Boyd Brown, a prominent South Carolina Democrat backing Beto O’Rourke, said Biden’s opening salvo stands out.

“This is very strong out of the chute. Well done. Biden just sucked the wind out of the sails for much of the field,” he said.

But he noted that announcement bumps fade and said Biden still has “to campaign the same aggressive way for the next nine months.”

Reporter: Biden Campaign Physically Blocking Press from Asking Questions

A freelance reporter covering Joe Biden's presidential campaign launch says the campaign has gotten physical in its attempts to block the press from questioning the former vice president.

Marcus DiPaola, a videographer who was on the trail with Biden Wednesday night in Iowa, used his Twitter account to voice complaints from multiple members of the press regarding poor treatment from campaign staff, which was reportedly blocking reporters from asking questions and taking photographs of anyone who objected.

"A reporter approached @JoeBiden to ask a question and a member of his staff told the reporter to leave, and when the reporter explained that they were just doing their job, the staffer said she was too," DiPaola wrote. "The staffer then took a photo of the reporter."

His initial tweet was followed by other similar anecdotes from the trail.

"A different reporter just told me that yesterday a staff member physically put their body between the reporter and @JoeBiden," he wrote. "The reporter said they weren't even that close and that there were several supporters between the reporter and Biden."

"This second reporter tells me the staffer physically invaded their space to the point that the reporter could smell the staffer's ponytail."

"THIRD reporter just told me that a staff member physically put their body between @JoeBiden and the reporter, moments ago at this rally in Des Moines," he wrote. "This third reporter just told me that the @JoeBiden staffer blocked his camera shot by putting up her hands."

DiPaola said reporters were unwilling to put their names to complaints, fearing it would jeopardize their ability to cover the campaign effectively in the future.

Eventually, the treatment from the campaign impacted DiPaola himself as he was trying to capture video of Biden leaving the event.

The campaign attempted to "remove" the press from a public lot and told reporters they would not be allowed to ask questions, according to DiPaola. It then moved the location of Biden's motorcade numerous times and sent Biden through a Jimmy Johns in its attempt to avoid questions, but was ultimately unsuccessful.

DiPaola was able to capture video, available on Getty Images, of Biden saying he thinks Attorney General William Barr should resign.

Still sounds kind of iffy to me.

De Blasio expected to announce 2020 presidential run next week: sources

Mayor de Blasio is expected to announce he’s running for president next week, according to four sources with knowledge of the plans.

The 2020 announcement could come as early as de Blasio’s birthday on Wednesday, when he’ll turn 58, two sources said. The kickoff was initially expected this week but pushed back, according to another source.

De Blasio’s federal political action committee, Fairness PAC, recently polled Iowa voters. The PAC also bankrolled the mayor’s recent travel to key early voting primary states, including trips to Nevada, Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

Fairness PAC spokesman Mike Casca — who took an unpaid leave of absence from City Hall last month to work for the committee – said “no decision” has been made yet and wouldn’t explicitly deny that de Blasio was announcing a campaign next week.

“Very hard to announce something without a decision – nearly impossible, some might say,” Casca said in a text message on Friday.

This lineup makes Mondale look like a real winner in comparison. At the heart of the Dems weakness is not even the obvious benefits for votes tactics that a more right leaning person see as obvious cheap pandering, but the fact that they totally ignore and fix their own primaries against their own voters is what a moderate Dem is seeing now for the second time.

Joe Biden: U.S. Has an ‘Obligation’ To Give Healthcare To Illegal Aliens

Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden said during a campaign stop in California on Wednesday that the United States has an "obligation" to give healthcare to illegal aliens.

"I think that anyone who is in a situation where they're in need of healthcare, regardless of whether they are documented or undocumented, we have an obligation to see that they are cared for," Biden said in Los Angeles. "That's why I think we need more clinics around the country."

WATCH:

Biden may find his position won't do him any favors on the campaign trial.

That's because the American people overwhelmingly oppose benefits, and legal rights for illegal immigrants, according to a Rasmussen Poll released this week:

HILLARY HITS NEW HAMPSHIRE: Fresh off speaking tour, Clinton heads to first primary state

Is Hillary Clinton running a non-campaign campaign for president?

The twice-failed Democrat presidential candidate isn’t interested in discussing an endorsement for 2020, and sources close to Clinton have repeatedly said she hasn’t closed the door on a rematch with President Trump.

Then on Wednesday, just days after wrapping up a national speaking tour with husband and former president Bill Clinton, Obama’s secretary of state headed to the first 2020 primary state of New Hampshire to lecture about her decades of experience in world affairs as a career politician.

Clinton boasted about her role in brokering the Iran Nuclear Deal to about 900 students and faculty at Dartmouth College in Hanover, and insinuated that President Trump is instigating a confrontation with the country, WFFF reports.

“I don’t think we can, unfortunately, rule that out,” she said. “And there is always, always the threat of miscalculation. Somebody makes a mistake. Somebody on our side, somebody on the Iranian side.”

Clinton’s comments follow decades of experience making a lot of mistakes and miscalculations during her tenure as a U.S. senator and secretary of state. Clinton voted for the Iraq War and pushed to overthrow governments friendly to the U.S., such as Egypt, which contributed to the rise of ISIS and increased conflicts in Iraq, Syria and other places.

She also helped negotiate military intervention in Libya that led to the assassination of Muammar Gaddafi and the country’s ruin at the hands of Islamic militants. There was also the murder of Americans including Ambassador Christopher Stevens on a U.S. Special Mission in Benghazi in 2012, and Clinton’s inability to prevent North Korea from developing nuclear weapons or Russia’s involvement in Ukraine, according to The National Interest.

But Clinton didn’t discuss her failures at Dartmouth, of course, focusing instead on her favorite topic of conversation: Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

“The idea that our election is being trifled with, being impacted, and maybe being determined by Putin … that should give us heartburn,” Clinton said.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is declining to participate in a Fox News town hall, a move that comes after a number of her fellow 2020 Democratic competitors have agreed to engage with the network’s audience.

“I love town halls. I’ve done more than 70 since January, and I’m glad to have a television audience be a part of them. Fox News has invited me to do a town hall, but I’m turning them down—here’s why,” she wrote Tuesday morning in a series of tweets. “Fox News is a hate-for-profit racket that gives a megaphone to racists and conspiracists—it’s designed to turn us against each other, risking life & death consequences, to provide cover for the corruption that’s rotting our government and hollowing out our middle class.”

Warren charged that the network “balances a mix of bigotry, racism, and outright lies with enough legit journalism to make the claim to advertisers that it’s a reputable news outlet.” She said that participation in a town hall on the network sends a signal that it is appropriate to still buy ads on the cable channel, which hosts a primetime lineup of overtly pro-Trump hosts who engage in bigoted and conspiratorial rhetoric—something she doesn’t want to encourage.

“A Democratic town hall gives the Fox News sales team a way to tell potential sponsors it’s safe to buy ads on Fox—no harm to their brand or reputation (spoiler: it’s not),” she said.

Throughout her time on the trail thus far, Warren noted that she has held town halls in 17 states and Puerto Rico, with press and voter questions at each.

“I’ve done 57 media avails and 131 interviews, taking over 1,100 questions from press just since January,” she said. “Fox News is welcome to come to my events just like any other outlet. But a Fox News town hall adds money to the hate-for-profit machine. To which I say: hard pass.”

In mid-April, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) participated in a Fox town hall in Pennsylvania, which was a ratings success and an opportunity to showcase how some of his staple issues like Medicare for All resonated with an audience in a state President Trump narrowly captured in 2016.

Following his appearance, a number of 2020 candidates eager for their own hour of free air time have been in talks with the network about doing their own town halls. Already Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) has been featured in one of her own, and Fox has scheduled events with South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY).

Democrats have been grappling with how to best handle the large audience Fox commands with some thinking it is essential to directly engage. In 2018, Warren appeared on the network three times, primarily to discuss legislative work and the introduction of new bills.

The Democratic National Committee banned Fox from hosting one of its primary debates—after a New Yorker article revealed the network’s cozy relationship with President Trump—but signaled early on that it was up to the individual campaigns as to how they wanted to execute their own media strategies. The view from Warren's camp is that all the campaigns will make their own choices on when and how to engage.

Pocahontas never had a snowball's chance, but this is the nail in the coffin.

Mark Cuban leaves open possibility of running for president as an independent

Mark Cuban left open the possibility of running for president, telling CNBC on Tuesday, “We’ll see.”

Cuban told CNBC’s Scott Wapner that some things would need to happen for him to be motivated to run in 2020, and if he did, it would be as an independent.

“We’ll see what happens. It would take the perfect storm for me to do it,” the billionaire entrepreneur and Dallas Mavericks owner said. “There’s some things that could open the door, but I’m not projecting or predicting it right now.”

“I still think there’s a real opportunity for somebody who is in the middle but has some charisma, has the ability to relate to both sides but is not a politician. The reality is people don’t trust politicians,” Cuban said in the telephone interview on “Halftime Report. ”

When asked who on the Democratic side has the best chance of winning, Cuban said “nobody right now.” “If you look at why people voted for Donald Trump, in my opinion, first and foremost it was because he wasn’t a politician. ”

Cuban said the more than 20 Democratic candidates so far are all politicians. “Politicians are the least trusted of every profession,” he said.

Cuban said none of the candidates stands out, not even former Vice President Joe Biden, who is leading the polls.

Poll: Biden leads Dems by 18 points, followed by Sanders and Warren

Former Vice President Joe Biden maintains a comfortable lead over the other candidates in the Democratic Party's 2020 primary field, according to a new poll.

A Fox News poll released Thursday found that Biden enjoys an 18-point lead over his closest challenger, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) sitting in third place.

Biden was supported by 35 percent of likely Democratic primary voters in the poll, up from 31 percent in March, while Sanders sat at 17 percent, a slight dip from March when he registered support from 23 percent of voters.

Warren, meanwhile, has yet to break double digits even as she has seen her support in the poll surge from 4 percent in March to 9 percent in the most recent poll.

Also having notable shifts in support in the poll were Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), who saw her support dip from 8 percent to 5 percent, and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D), who has climbed to fourth place at 6 percent after previously registering just 1 percent support in March.

Defeating President Trump remains the top priority of Democratic primary voters, according to the poll, which found that 73 percent listed a victory in November 2020 as their top priority over policy decisions.

51 percent want to see someone who shares their views take office by comparison, and 47 percent want someone with "new ideas" to take office.

The Fox News poll was conducted between May 11-14 and contacted 469 registered Democratic voters nationwide. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
