Would you consider buying a Desktop Computer for personal use?
« on: January 01, 2017, 11:04:18 AM »
I'm happy with my iPad for all of my Getbig and other internet needs.
But i'm thinking about buying an iMac primarily for my wife to use.
Any of you still using a desktop in your home?

What does the desktop provide that the iPad/Laptop would not?

Generally for me, it comes down to MS Office, since I use that quite a bit.

The only reason for a desktop these days is if you need a specialized video card, like for gaming. For Christmas, I built a desktop for my son. I researched all of the components and bought the best of the best and put it all together.

I can't put in the hours needed for my getbig use and finance work on a laptop. it becomes too uncomfortable.

I guess the rationale is:
If you know that you're never going to take the computer out of your home and will never use the battery, then why buy a laptop? ... when you can get a more powerful (bang for your buck) computer with say a "27-inch Retina 5K display" which should only enhance one's overall entertainment experience during years of use.

That makes sense from a screen perspective, but the portability, even in the house, would trump that for me.

Well, yeah, that has become the deal breaker issue for us:  portability in the home.
We live in a small condo and would just need to move the iMac (for example) daily between a couple of rooms that are side-by-side.  So it would kinda be a shame to "downgrade" to a laptop only because we couldn't find a suitable quality mobile computer desk/table/cart to wheel back and forth.

If you get a desktop, then it should be for gaming purposes.  Other than that, its a waste of money.  The desktop I have will be the last one I ever use and I'm about to erase the whole thing and just use it to run Scrapebox.  I use a tablet and a laptop nowadays with Android Sticks

a small desktop might still be a good buy.

you would want a real keyboard, real mouse and a real screen anyway. at least i would.

I have a desktop now because I bought a laptop a few years ago and it only lasted about a year and a half before it clunked out on me. For me it is for the durability....a desktop will generally last much longer than a laptop. Laptops will last about 3 years tops if you use them everyday.

Legit. I put a 1070 card in my son's new desktop. It plays BF1 in full 4K at 60 fps at 144MHz

I'm on a desktop with a 24" screen right now. Some old people, like me, can't see what is on a 5" screen without a magnifying glass.  ;D

Desktops are good if you want larger screens, keyboards, expansion slots. If you work with spreadsheets and multitask, you need a large screen. They still complement office rooms well.

$800 laptop- equivalent specced desktop $400. Add wireless keyboard with trackpad or wireless mouse, portable as you need.
