Saddest Bodybuilding Death
« on: April 01, 2006, 11:26:54 PM »
What do you think is the saddest death of a bodybuilder or a former bodybuilder. I would have to say Paul DeMayo, because he was so young, and Don Youngblood, because he started late in life and you have to wonder...

Personally for me it was Dave Johns. He helped my out alot when I was a teenager. Also Joe Valdez, he used to take all of my photographs since I was 18.....

What's sad is the long process leading up to their death. Generally long-term downward spirals with endings that by then aren't a surprise.

Mentzer was the saddest story, because he seemed smart enough to know better than to let the long-term deterioration take place and become very obvious.

Demayo did suicide,
Mentzer and Youngblood,
you don't have to be a mathematician to figure out what killed them. Remember flex wheeler? The man has like a cat multiple lives, he should be dead to.

Respect to the dead, but no as example.

Do you notice that almost all Olympias are still alive? They were gifted, these persons pushed the boundry's to much.

What did Mentzer die of?

Mentzer had a heart attack while working on his computer.  Basically he died working on his latest projects which John Little fortunately finished.  He had previously been dianogsed with some blood clot disorder and was on some potent blood thinners when he tried to be a donor for his brother.  Basically the same thing Cory Everson had.  Nothing to do with steroids because his father died of the same thing right around his age.  When he died, his brother pretty much had no reason to hang on I suppose.

Don Youngblood on the other had was on a very heavy off-season stack and basically died of a heart attack while taking a nap while his family was away at some picnic.

They were all great bodybuilder and they will be missed.

I used to see him across the street from Ciao Bella on Newbury Street. He'd just be standing there in front of that little market people watching.

I'd have to say Ray Mentzer.  He was my friend and training partner.  Don Ross too.  We had some good times.

To be completely fair, Don had developed a sleep apnea which didn't have anything to do with bodybuilding.  hifrommike can tell you more about this.

Although Don DID have diabetes and had also had an angioplasty performed and still had plans to complete again, so it didn't seem as though he was the most health conscious person in the world.   ???

Also, he was a trucker for many years, and with that comes high stress and bad food generally.

No, you're wrong....he was "on a very heavy off-season stack"

Jon Riggins?

Seriously, they are all sad.  But not learning from their deaths is even sadder.  Youngblood was my favorite so his absence saddens me the most.  :'(

Have to wonder what?

Paul DeMayo was a sad case.  Don was an amazing person beyond the bodybuilder, and also relatively young.

I wonder if he was so unhealthy before he began bodybuilding that he would have died anyway, or if something he used or did hurried his death.

Probably drugs of recreational nature.

I wonder if he was so unhealthy before he began bodybuilding that he would have died anyway, or if something he used or did hurried his death.

Don had tons of heart disease deaths in his family... He was also obese prior to taking up bodybuilding in his early fourties.  From AK too... not the best place to find heart healthy cooking.  Pile those goodies together with all the bells and whistles of bodybuilding.... recipe for problems.
