Just to be clear, hololens has a small field of vision. It is NOT close to consumer ready.
Augmented reality, done well is a long, long time away.
Much longer than virtual reality.
So how immersive is it exactly is what I'm wondering? Has the technology advanced far enough so as to get you lost in space so to speak?
The technology is advanced enough - the software is something that is a hit and miss and rarely engages you for hours on end. That generally works out okay because you're not going to spend hours in VR, generally. If you live in a warm climate, it's pretty hot under the headset and basically, it does have a mild druglike effect in that you can feel a little oddness, coming back to reality after a long session.
The thing you're going to realise as soon as you get into VR is that depth makes everything much much better. It's really hard not to baulk when shit comes at you in VR. Horror is an absolute fucking nightmare to play. It's always the same when I put people into a horror wave shooter for the first time. Bravado up until the headset goes on and then "oh.." and the fun begins.
I have played with some VR stuff. PS4, Oculus, HTV Vive. I'm not super into most of it myself.
I just wonder if it doesn't end up similar to the whole "3D" thing. 3D was a big thing a few years ago and it really didn't go anywhere.
No offence, but if you're still wondering about it being like 3D movies, then I submit you haven't played with it all that much.
I mean, my bullshit detector was starting to go off when you said you wanted the holodeck and you claim to have used the vive (which has a huge holodeck vibe that is only restricted by room size).
