Sec. of State Tillerson on Syria/Assad
« on: April 06, 2017, 01:13:09 PM »
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Thursday that the U.S. seeks to remove Bashar Assad as Syria's president through "a political process," not through war despite reports to the contrary.

"The process by which Assad would leave is something that I think requires an international community effort, both to first defeat ISIS within Syria, to stabilize the Syrian country, to avoid further civil war, and then to work collectively with our partners around the world through a political process that would lead to Assad leaving," Tillerson said.

"Those steps are underway," he added.

AP INTERVIEW: KREMLIN SUPPORT FOR ASSAD NOT UNCONDITIONAL

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/E/EU_RUSSIA_SYRIA?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2017-04-06-11-50-08

MOSCOW (AP) -- President Vladimir Putin's spokesman said Thursday that Russia's support for Syrian President Bashar Assad is not unconditional, but that the country demands a full investigation of the suspected chemical attack on a rebel-held province in Syria before the United Nations takes any action.

Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov's remarks came two days after the suspected chemical attack killed at least 72 people. Moscow, Assad's key backer, has supported the Syrian government militarily in the ongoing conflict since 2015.

Peskov told The Associated Press in an interview that "unconditional support is not possible in this current world," but added that "it is not correct to say that Moscow can convince Mr. Assad to do whatever is wanted in Moscow. This is totally wrong."

Moscow and Damascus "enjoy a relationship of cooperation, of exchange of views and full mutual support," Peskov said. Assad and his army are "the only real power in Syria that can resist terrorists on the ground," he said.

That's about right.
So the media was again running their own agenda... surprise  ::)

Russia in 2015:

In an interview with the Vesti v Subbotu (Saturday News) television show Medvedev denied all accusations against Russia suggesting its operation in Syria aims to support Assad.

"No, that is absolutely not true. The Syrian people should decide who will rule the country… At the moment we consider Assad to be legitimate president," Medvedev said.

USA media and hawk elites are claiming Russia protects Assad but to me who follows both sides, it's clear their aim was and is to put an end to random and outside-sponsored regime changes. Libya was the red line for Russia.

In 2011:

Asked if Moscow will maintain its support for the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the Russian foreign minister said: "We are not protecting any regime."

That's rich coming from a muslim dictator who has been a supporter of ISIS and islamic terrorism and threatened the US and NATO.

He's desperate in ball licking.
He just encountered huge coup attempt by his own military under a year ago.
He just got in big fight with all the EU leaders.
He's alone and needs support for tightening of his grip over Turkey.

But apparently he gets his info from media, as Tillerson just denied what the media tried to portray. Which of course every person with common sense knew from the beginning. Americans didn't start war with Russia over any of the numerous past arguments and they won't do it over Assad. Boring but reality often is.

lol are serious? Russia vetoes any UN security Council resolution condemning Assad's Syria for their war crimes, even in the recent chemical weapons attack Russia is on board in claiming that they were only the result of Assad's forces bombing rebel weapons.

I've been no fan of Trump thus far but that view will change if he does the right thing by attacking Syria.

Trump is in a tough position, a few air strikes won't solve anything. He would have to go into Syria for the long haul, a full fledged war.
Aside from battling the Syrian military, Isis is also there...not to mention, no one knows how the Russians will react.

This is how you know the next big economic downturn needs wallpapered over. Doesn't make any sense.

We give Iran 6 months to hide their nuke program from inspectors but in two days we're sure Assad gassed these people. The US population is STUPID.

He could hurt if not eliminate their air force capability - drastically reducing their ability to continue indiscriminate attacks on civilians, something Obama should have done.

Russia won't do shit.

The truth is just the opposite of what they say. If it's in the ME and it's not Saudi or Israel it's up for some "stabilization".

Russia should sink one American vessel in area. Shouldn't be difficult.
Unfortunately as said Putin is not strong enough to lead in war.

Of course this is non-event factually. If Americans would have wanted to really do something they would have attacked Damascus where the government is. But this is successful pr operation and Putin is in position of weakness now.

This was act of terrorism against sovereign nation by USA. No way around that.

Hahahaa, Putin is back!! He actually never left.

Most of Syrian AF fighter jets were evacuated from the said base before the attack by Americans!
Only 5-6 persons killed.

Details to follow..

I'm sure Russia will by accident hit American positions at some point like they eventually hit Turkish troops. Maybe increase support for rebels in Afghanistan too. Russia beat nazi germany after all and Usa is nowhere near the superiority the nazis had in 40s.

Russia cofirms loss of six Syrian fighter jets.

Only 23 of US missiles hit the target!
That's quite poor rate... less than 50%. Usually cruise missiles have above 70%. Russia shot some of them down? This is BIG
