I thought it might be good to alternate with regular deads in my training.  I'm not planning on competing anytime soon.

Thanks for the advice absent.

It is a great way to deadlift, your best bet is to find someone at your gym who does sumo deads.  Much better to learn fron someone who knows their sh*t in person then off a website.  Just ask around, i'm someone can help u....

Considering they can be done in a powerlifting competition, I beg to differ...

make sure your hips are strong enough for sumo's, sumos rely a lot more on hips, glutes and inner thighs than pure back strength just keep the same things in mind as when you do regular DL's, push the feet through the floor, keep the bar in, pull back not just up, keep your toes pointed outward and push outward on your knees, regular DL's are a lot better for size building because the range of motion is greater.

regular deadlifts do work the back more than any other DL, the "growing your ass" part you're talking about is just muscle mass you're putting on your hips, they are a muscle too, your back will grow just fine from dl's.

I don't want bigger hips because my back and chest are narrow

then get your back and chest and shoulders bigger, deadlifts are too important for a NATURAL trainee to ignore, they release too much testosterone and build a lot of muscle.

if you work your ass off on squats and deadlifts you'll have an easier time adding size and strength to your other bodyparts.

my squat for 4 last time i did them was 260 and my deadlift for 4 was 265. i got off the fat loss crap cause my waist is 33 now and my abs are starting to show again. in the next few months i'm gonna see if i can get both lifts up to 315. i think the squat will be harder.

you can do that easy, shoot for 405 within a year or year and a half.

squats very frequently have led me to overtraining. the way i worked out when i was trying to grow was squats and powerlifting moves one week and the other week more concentrated bodybuilding moves. and the third week weedouttheweek's "stamina move"  :)

Thanks a lot for the tips guys.  I have been prowling around Irongame a lot and learning.

I like Sumos a LOT better then conventional deads.

I'm going up pretty slow with the weight, pulled a single for 335.  I can trap bar dead for about 400 (dont know the weight of that bar) so once I get comfortable with the sumo I think I will try to move towards 405.

I got some advice from
Rickey Dale Crain,  b.b.a.,   i.s.s.a.
IPF/WPC/AAU  World Champion
2000 Powerlifting Hall of Fame Inductee

He said:

[For sumo]

hook grip is best...but not for everyone......most, like me do the alternating grip.....hand size and pain threshold is the key on the hook grip...

as for supplementary work

conventional deadlifts
lat pulls
we also do deadlifts both sumo and conventional off of a box..it is actually part of the workout...

leg ext
leg curls
calf work
ab work

that is the basics and all you need..

He also said that he pulls about once a week, but I've been so eager to get good at these I'm pulling every couple of days.  He was very helpful responding back to my emails in minutes.  It was pretty inspirational to hear from him because at 148 (my current weight) he pulled 661.

he has a good technique description on his site also at: http://crain.ws/advancedtechniques.html

I appreciate all the help from everyone.
