Yes and no. He is adept at getting the government to pay for his hobbies. But you can actually buy a Tesla or send off a payload on SpaceX. Is the Tesla revolutionary? Not completely, but Steve Jobs made the MP3 player cool even though it existed long before the IPod. Musk is visionary and a master marketer. And that's how you make money.

BTW The real Nikolai Tesla was a failed genius - as smart as he was he could barely support himself. I'd rather be an Edison than a Tesla.

I agree he made money of the tax payers, but the Model S was a revolutionary car.  The Model 3 will be even more revolutionary because more people will be able to afford it.

Volkswagen was the people's car and Tesla is the govt's car. Really can't fault the guy. He's smart enough to know that private equity would never fund all the R&D he wants to do. He actually learned that from Mr. Tesla....

Tesla has paid back their loan long time ago. Maybe you work with ICE cars, hence your negativity?

It all comes down to funding.  He sold investors on Tesla to the tune of 52 Billion.  I'm sure he'll find investors for Hyperloop One and the Boring company.  

You have to give him credit on a number of fronts.  He is very good at engineering management.  In the end the team he hires and manages produces results that work.  Case in point the Model s and Model 3.  That history of results makes investors comfortable and provides the funding for new projects.  

Also, because of his celebrity, anything with his name on it will attract the best and the brightest in any field.

All the point brought up in this video are valid and will need to be addressed.  However, Hyperloop One is technically possible using current technology.  There are magnetically levitating trains and creating a long vacuum is nothing new.  See Large the Large Hadron Collider brought up in the video.  So, Elon knows it's technically possible, but also very very expensive.  Do you see any magnetically levitating trains in America.  Of course not, we don't even have high speed rail.

That will be the true magic of this whole thing.  Convincing investors to continue to pour billions of dollars into Hyperloop One without getting a return for decades if ever.  He's succeeded doing this with Tesla.  Can he do it again with Hyperloop One?
