My grandparents lived in Monticello, IN.  They were humble folks who did nothing more extraordinary than contentedly live a modest life.  There's something to be said for that, and for being in a place where others are doing the same.

I would not move from Indiana to some megalopolis.  Cities are for visiting, not living in.  You want a beach, go to Lake Shafer.

Maybe I'm just nostalgic because grandpa let me pilot the Shafer Queen.

If I'd had the opportunity to pilot the Shafer Queen with my grandpa, nothing could have pried me from hometown Indiana. My wife and I always dreamed of having a small farm in Michigan near Albion, where I have considerable family heritage. Unfortunately, we never made that happen. Portland, Oregon was as far as we got from the craziness of L.A. The compromise mostly worked. We had a good life here.

So if LA isn't so perfect where is considered the best place to live in the US?

I don't like the state corporate or personal taxes here in California and am thinking of trying out CO or Utah for fresh air, less political correctness, and room enough to buy a ranch.

You seem to have had a happy life and provided well for your family. Can't believe you're gay

Being bisexual has been sometimes difficult and complicated. Overall, my life has been good though.

We had no secrets, either before or after we married. Although, knowledge is not acceptance. We were rebellious, naive, in love and believed anything was possible. Our deep bond kept us together through the many tough times. Did either of us ever have regrets? Sure we did, but they were never big enough to end our relationship.

Under $400k?... in da hood maybe.  More like 600-700k.  Better to stay mobile and rent instead.
The job might not work out.

In 2005 I almost took a job in the Downey/South Gate area, but decided against it.  Glad I did, the company got acquired in 2009 and eventually laid-off all the employees.

There are nice places to live in LA, but they are VERY expensive.  I've visited LA many times and know many people who currently live there.  Believe me, you do not want to live near any of the ghetto areas.

I lived in San Diego for 10 years and I loved it.  Even though I hate the leftist politics/attitudes, I'll probably move back when I retire.

Sam Diego wasn't slow for you? I always got that  weird hippy vibe out there but the beaches are beautiful and the women are great.

I have been to Lake Schafer several times. Very nice place to chill and check out those Midwestern ladies in their bikinis.  :o  I am actually relieved that I turned down that opportunity in LA. My girlfriend and I are heading to Sandestin, FL a week from Friday for 8 days. I will get my fix of the beach before the cold blast is upon us in a few months.

Slow?... I guess it's slower than LA.  When I moved to SD there was an adjustment period because people were more laid back and relaxed... that was a huge difference from the East coast rat-race I was used to.  I heard that SD is getting more like LA every year... more people, more traffic.  People who move there must earn a very good living or they're rich... the cost of living is very high there.

There is a hippy vibe is almost every Cali coastal city.  In SD the main place where 60's throwbacks seem to congregate is called 'Ocean Beach'.  Lots of beach bums and surfer types there too.

First off, thank you to everyone that gave great advice and information. I took a lot of it into consideration when making my decision today. I unfortunately declined the job offer because it was not lucrative enough to justify making the move to LA area. I will probably now follow my plan B of working 4 1/2 more years then retiring and get a place in the Destin, Florida panhandle area. Me and my girlfriend are going down there is 3 weeks and will check out some properties while vacationing. Thanks again fellow getbiggers!

Hey... As someone who just spent 3.5 years in California, I can totally relate.  I just moved back to Florida (still with the same company though).

Aside from rent and overall cost of living. You have to factor in other things... At least for me I was also spending a lot of money travelling back to the east coast to visit family... There were a couple of "emergencies" that also requeired me to make the cross country trip a few more times than I would've liked to.  Plus with two small kids it was a pain.  California is beautiful, and I would consider moving back again but right now it was not the right time.

Sounds like you followed your gut.  Good luck with the plan B. I'm sure it will work out for the best!

Ach, I'm willing to bet that Florida is as close as you can get to California, anyway. You know you aren't missing much.

Thanks BIG ACH! The timing for this offer was pretty good. I was managing my mom's life basically for the last year and she passed away June 20th. The offer came around 6 weeks or so later. She was the only thing that would have kept me from leaving. Damn I miss her. Anyway, it is just me and my girlfriend now so we are pretty free to go if either another opportunity comes around or I wait for retirement. As I mentioned a few times, when winter hits I will have regrets. But it was the right decision.

I recently spoke to a woman who visits Hawaii every year. Since Hawaii became an American state, Hawaii isn't the Hawaii anymore it used to be.
The same will prob happen to Hong Kong after the Chinese inquisition.

Isn't Hawaii's cost of living even higher than LA's? I have never been to Hawaii.
