He knows the only way to win especially at his age is to step on the gas full throttle, I can only surmise he must actually want to die on some level or really not care. If he does croak I will personally struggle to feel any sympathy for the dude and that's the truth!

Then his arms suddenly appeared oily

Then the tatts appeared

So to summarise, he did not break out the tattoos until the shit had already hit the fan.

I think it's delusion. None of these guys actuall think they're going to die. Why would he? He's been bailed out thus far every time he had a scare. Only when he's on his deathbed, or the final few minutes of his life, will he realize how stupid it all was.
