I'm not a Yankee fan and just speaking as a sportswriter who covers baseball. (I'm actually a Mets fan.) This stock of 'Baby Bombers' was supposed to get them close and then a huge free agent offseason acquisition would have put them over the top. IMO, they have been playing with house money since making the wild card and should have - talent level alone - lost to Cleveland. I'm a traditionalist and am rooting for Yankees-Dodgers World Series.
I spent a week at ST this year going to a couple Yankees games, then up to St. Lucie to watch the mets for a few days. Where are they now vs. then is completely backwards.
I can't call it house money anymore. From a talent perspective, Yankees offense was better than Cleveland's this year, their bullpen is deeper (actually historic considering 5 guys in their pen could close for most teams), and a starting 3 of Severino / Tanaka / Gray is as good as any team, strengthened even more by the reemergence of Sabbathia.
It's only going to get better - their farm is mega deep with elite talent, their GM can't miss on anything right now, and their payroll is shrinking at a time when the best FA class in MLB history is a year a way.
Mets should trade us Degrom and rebuild.
