The Beatles were/are the most influential band ever
« on: October 21, 2017, 10:35:22 PM »
I like the Beach Boys, but not really sure how "Pet Sounds" is ranked one of the top albums of all time. The Beatles were so influential, cranking out at least two albums a year for their entire existence. They shaped the way modern music was recorded. True geniuses. I'm glad to have seen Sir Paul. Even if you don't like them, you can't dispute their influence on all music. Best band of all time in my opinion.

It could be said that the factory life influenced the musical sound of Heavy Metal as well as its general tone: Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi’s thick, grungy sound was the result of a factory accident in which a machine sliced off the tips of two fingers on his right hand. To compensate for his injured fingers, Iommi loosened the strings, resulting in a darker sound.

same say beatles

i say factory accidents

not a single word about beatles.

Prior to 1970 and Black Sabbath's arrival, the sounds that we now recognize as the building blocks for heavy metal were both scattered and accidental, making it impossible to pinpoint any other album or band as the genre's absolute Ground Zero. From the start of the British Invasion came the Who (Live at Leeds was, coincidentally, recorded the day after Sabbath's debut was released), the Yardbirds and the Kinks, all of whom were incorporating distortion and feedback into their records as far back as the mid-'60s.
Metal's roots in heavy blues came from Cream, the Jeff Beck Group, Iron Butterfly, Vanilla Fudge and, of course, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. Add to that group Steppenwolf, who are credited with coining the phrase "heavy metal" in "Born to Be Wild." Together, these acts proved that this sound was, in fact, commercially viable.
Perhaps the only group that came close to capturing heavy metal’s fatalistic outlook, sheer volume, and anti-social nature prior to 1970 was San Francisco’s Blue Cheer on 1968's thunderous Vincebus Eruptum. And yet, not even they hit the heavy metal bulls-eye.

Only ever cared for George. All Things Must Pass for me is better than anything they put out as a group.

I don't think any one band should receive credit. Rock evolved from the blues, the Beatles were more pop oriented. They definitely have the album sales record, only Elvis can rival that.

The Beatles are the greatest pop band of all time. Personally I think that's the accolade they deserve more than anything else.

Not one of my favourites, but I recognise their role and status in music history.

The Beatles are among the most influential musical artists of all time. The are in the mode of Chuck Berry, Elvis, the Rolling Stones, etc. They created the rock band as we know it. I really didnt care for their music in the beginning, but they evolved into a favorite. There is no denying they changed the musical world.

Strongly disagree.  The aforementioned Blue Cheer are one of the early bands at the roots of metal.  Sabbath's heavy metal sound has its roots more in jazz than the Beatle's pop sound--you can hear the jazz influence in Bill Ward's drumming and Geezer Butler's bass.  Going back even further to the late 1950s, Link Wray pioneered the metal guitar sound.  Hendrix is also woven through heavy metal's DNA.  And the aforementioned masterpiece "Live at Leeds" by The Who (probably in my top 5 favorite albums of all time) has been described as "proto-metal" by some critics.  Also, the Stones' dirty, grungy sound and attitude definitely contributed more to metal than did the Fab Four.

The Beatles were undoubtedly hugely influential in rock music but to say they're at the roots of heavy metal...that's kind of silly.
