Are you geting most influential band and recording engineer confused. If recording techniques is why you think they are the best, you should really be giving props to abbey roads studios, and Geoff Emerick etc.
Goree Carter made the first rock album. So if “who started it”, that would be him.
Who made it mainstream and stole it would probably be Elvis.
If you are talking song writing and structure, maybe you can put the Beatles into that conversation.

Covers of their songs are always so much better.  They were influential but only by luck, in another time they would of been nobodies.

She’s so heavy (I want you) and Helter Skelter are considered to be the roots of heavy metal

No Beatles = no Sabbath

All the below bands contributed to shaping what would become heavy metal, without the evil/scary/ominous sound, but they were light years less heavy than Sabbath would be in 1969 and beyond. Blue Cheer came the closest to sounding brutally heavy for 1968.

The Who
The Kinks
Iron Butterly
Steppenwolf
Cream
Jimi Hendrix
Blue Cheer
Led Zeppelin

No they aren't. They spawned so much in music and to claim anything less is sheer ignorance.

For me it’s like listening to nails on a chalkboard. A cat on a fence. My ex-wife nagging me. I’d rather have a hot poker wrapped in barbed wire shoved in my eye than listen to the Beatles.

Over rated.
HUGE for their time...big influence on THAT generation.
Meaningless now.

The only thing from them I like is Dear Prudence.
...and I ONLY like that song cuz the Jerry Garcia Band redid it and KILLED IT!

I agree with the title of this thread wholeheartedly. Love The Beatles Channel on Sirius, with the one complaint that they play too much of their solo work (which, IMO, sucks for the most part) and their 'influences.'

Unless it's George's stuff.  He's my favorite Beatle.  He was also so good with the Traveling Wilburys.

One omission:

Deep Purple

Hard to argue against the Beatles being the most influential pop band of all time but heavy metal is another story. I would have to say it’s Led Zeppelin, John Bonham’s drumming in particular.

The Beatles "played the game"....they had countless meaningless pop hits(Love me do)....with no musical substance....played nice....had the teen girls screaming....THEN AFTER SUCCESS started to express more of their desire to be artists and express themselves musically....we remember Sgt Pepper and Revolver but also remember they were selling out big time with shit like "Ps I love you" pop hits to develop the money to say fuck you we are artists now.....Well played but I think we need to respect artists that NEVER sold out a little more....the Beatles did some MAD bullshit sellout shit for years until they had the money.....its safe to be an artist when you're already rich.....

Totally true. Without Chuck Berry, Buck Owens and The Shadows there is no Beatles...or Stones for that matter.

Without the minor progressions in Blues there would be no metal. Black Sabbath was a blues band called Earth originally. The hard edged sound started with The Kinks, Blue Cheer, The MC5, Stooges, etc and expanded out of mid 60s psychedelia.

John Mayall might be worth a mention here as Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Clapton were all members of his group at one time. And each went on to be in the Yardbirds too. It was Page that created The New Yardbirds and that became Zep. (Lucky to have seen the Yardbirds with Page...wow!)

And Link Wray....yes! Check out this heavy distorted version of Rumble

Yeah baby!  When HE was a kid, Page heard Link Wray's stuff, dug it and got inspired to play with that same style and attitude.
