Charity stems from the Latin Caritas, meaning Virtuous Love. Virtuous love is pure and unconditional, and so must not be tied to any sort of quid pro quo. Consequently, one engages in charity for purely unselfish reasons, without expectation of personal benefit. So it is that the pure at heart refrain from announcing or promoting their charitable works. For these reasons, I can't say that I donated to this most worthy effort, and I also can't claim that I deserve to be elevated to the exulted level of Golden-Thonged Hermes, The-Thrice-Blessed-Wizard-of-Miracles-and-Wonders. If I were not virtuous, I would state right now how I have already given, and quite well, to this cause, but modesty, and principle, prohibits me from doing so.
