My client...
« on: November 07, 2017, 03:51:29 PM »
Have you noticed that almost every guy with a bicep is now offering his training services to “clients”?  It’s hard to look at social media and not see a guy who works out peddling his training services.  These services used to be limited to bodybuilding champions, but lately it seems like anyone who has ever flexed his arm now sees himself as some sort of guru and soliciting “clients.”

I have seen a lot of posts lately that go something like this: they post a picture of someone in trunks or a bikini (maybe a before and after) and then caption it with  “I’m so proud of my client Chris… who made such progress in the gym.  Direct message me for info on training programs, fees, etc.”  There is nothing wrong with entrepreneurship, of course, but it used to be you actually had to be a bodybuilding champion, a certified personal trainer, or some kind of nutritionist to have the credibility to solicit clients.  Not anymore.  ::)

That's because anyone can be a personal trainer. These are the minimum qualifications:

To be eligible for the ACE Personal Trainer Certification Exam, you must: Be at least 18 years old. Have completed high school (or the equivalent). Hold a current CPR/AED certification with a live skills check.

The average gym goer who hires these minimal qualified people have no clue how easy it is and you do not need any knowledge to be a trainer. I can’t imagine all the clients that have been injured due to horrible advice from these idiots.

Agreed. You don't need to be a personal trainer to train the average person.

However, you do need extensive experience and education when it comes to training elite athletes. There is definitely a science behind training elite people.

Well have you see some of the idiots at the gym lately? I went to the gym to do cardio the other day, I can’t lift for another month, and this Indian dude was doing this weird made up thing on the last pull down machine... I think noobs would benefit from at least a couple classes if they can’t google like normal people.

In the old days back 25 plus years ago remember how basically the gym owner or one of his employees would just give you a program every 8 weeks for basically free and people would help each other out.

Personal training was basically a bastion for the well off and/or celebrities, much like having a nanny.(another thing where basically you left your kid with the local stay at home mom or babysitter after school and paid them in dollar bills and/or take something from the fridge plus 10 bucks for your trouble)

Now everyone needs their hand held in everything they do and are willing to spend hundreds, if not thousands for these services, not so much because they really need them as much as because everyone does it and they want to fit in.

Think about this Bay, who would ever have thought that Dog Walking would have become such a big business in the past decade. pretty much unheard of which is why the majority of dogs have goddam separation anxiety today whereas before they were basically house trained.

The times sure have changed.  Some of these instagram gurus, both male and female, are completely ridiculous.  I believe the term, generation nothingness, certainly comes to mind.

The best part is the "I only have a couple of spots opening up". As if they are so busy with clients. It's all a bunch of bullshit.

You won't find great personal trainer in your average gym rat or even a Olympia contender. good personal trainers have vast knowledge and understanding of human kinetics, anatomy, nutrition etc. They are not involved in bodybuilding. 90% of them don't even look like they lift unless they're into weightlifting or powerlifting.

I know it's mean but I enjoy showing these PT cretins up in the gym...

When I hear them spouting surious drivel about diet or physiology I often ask a question or two which I know they cannot answer, as they dont know jack about shit!  Funny watching their client loose all faith in them when they cannot explain what BMR is, how a muscle contracts or how to control insulin/leptin....all basics IMO that anyone charging for info should be versed in...

And then there is the "online coaching" and telephone coaching for which they also charge fees.  Has anyone in the history of working out ever gotten in shape from online or telephone coaching?  Is there no end to the bullshit? ::)
