Charlie Rose’s CBS News career came to an unceremonious end Tuesday when the network fired him over allegations of sexual harassment.

“A short time ago we terminated Charlie Rose’s employment with CBS News, effective immediately,” CBS News President David Rhodes wrote in a note to staff. “This followed the revelation yesterday of extremely disturbing and intolerable behavior said to have revolved around his PBS program. Despite Charlie’s important journalistic contribution to our news division, there is absolutely nothing more important, in this or any organization, than ensuring a safe, professional workplace — a supportive environment where people feel they can do their best work. We need to be such a place.”

Rose’s departure marks the downfall of one of television’s most venerable journalists and a major blow to CBS News, which enjoyed its greatest success ever in the morning thanks to “CBS This Morning,” which was built around Rose and his co-anchors, Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell, in 2012.

Rose’s serious demeanor and ability to engage a wide range of personalities in politics, the arts and business earned him respect and global recognition. He frequently jetted off to land interviews with world leaders.

“There is not a single person of note on the planet who does not know who he is,” said one CBS News executive who spoke on condition of anonymity. “His talent was so in the stratosphere.”

CBS had moved quickly Monday to suspend Rose, 75, after the Washington Post reported that day that eight women said they were subjected to inappropriate behavior while working with him. The story said Rose made unwanted sexual advances, appeared nude in their presence or groped them. His PBS talk show also was halted and there was no immediate update on the long-term status of the program.

Rose posted a statement on Twitter apologizing for his “inappropriate behavior.”

“I am greatly embarrassed. I have behaved insensitively at times, and I accept responsibility for that, though I do not believe that all of these allegations are accurate,” he said. “I always felt that I pursued shared feelings though I now realize that I was mistaken.”

On the Tuesday morning “CBS This Morning” broadcast, King and Donnell weighed in about their colleague.

“There is no excuse for this alleged behavior,” O’Donnell said. “It is systematic and pervasive, and I’ve been doing a lot of listening and I’m going to continue to do that. This I know is true: Women cannot achieve equality in the workplace or in society until there is a reckoning and a taking of responsibility.”

King said she was “reeling” from the revelations about Rose and got little sleep before Tuesday’s episode of the show.

“We are all rocked by this,” King said. “And I — I want to echo what Norah said. I really applaud the women that speak up despite the friendship. He doesn’t get a pass because I can’t stop thinking about the anguish of these women, what happened to their dignity, what happened to their bodies, what happened maybe to even their careers.”

For CBS, a change to the lineup around the glass roundtable at its studio in Manhattan presents a challenge for what has become a profitable bright spot for its news division.

Rose’s presence on “CBS This Morning” signified a commitment to serious news, which has been a major factor in the program’s ratings growth in recent years.

you can start with the majority of the male staff at Fox News and work back from there

I doubt that either party has the preponderance of offenders

I used to think that all things were equal when it came to misconduct, violence, etc.  Not anymore.  There is just too much evidence of liberals breaking the law, harassing and intimidating people with opposing viewpoints, vandalism, and overall fascism.  Yes conservatives break the law.  But there isn't really much of a comparison when you start looking at the number of Democrat governors, senators, Congressman, mayors, etc. who have broken the law.

Your memory is accurate.  There have been a number of famous preachers who have been caught screwing around.  That's a different category.  We're talking about politicians.  I've been updating a thread for about the past ten years.  It only has Democrats, and I'm not saying Republicans don't break the law.  They do.  I'm talking about comparisons.  It's really not close like I once thought.

I'm also not aware of any network similar to Fox News that apparently had a pervasive culture of sexual harassment starting with the CEO and right on down through their top star and top management.  There is nothing similar in left wing media

‘CBS This Morning’ is ‘begging’ Oprah to fill in for Charlie Rose

“CBS This Morning” wants Oprah Winfrey to save the day and fill in for Charlie Rose after he was axed due to a shocking sexual-harassment scandal, sources exclusively tell Page Six.

“They are begging Oprah to fill in,” said a TV insider. “Not full time . . . But they are hoping she’ll do one day, two days, one hour, fill in till Christmas. Anything.”

Reports have said a rotating cast of CBS News talent will step in. But the network’s not exactly known for its deep bench of stars compared to rivals NBC and ABC. Suggested Rose replacements on Twitter have so far included Tony Dokoupil and Bianna Golodryga. Little-known Jeff Glor was just tapped to take over “CBS Evening News.”

Winfrey joined CBS’s “60 Minutes” in September, and she is best friends with “CBS This Morning” co-host Gayle King. An insider said of the strategy to land Winfrey: “Unless you get a superstar [on the show], it’s always going to be, ‘Charlie’s missing.’”

King mentioned Winfrey on the show on Tuesday, saying of Rose: “I really am still reeling. I got an hour and 42 minutes of sleep last night. Both my son and my daughter called me. Oprah called me and said, ‘Are you OK?’ I am not OK.”

A CBS rep declined to comment, and King did not get back to us. A rep for Winfrey said Tuesday that the star has not been officially asked to be on the show as of Tuesday.

CBS wooed Winfrey five years before she recently agreed to join “60 Minutes.”

Meanwhile, perhaps kicking himself with Rose’s departure is Josh Elliott — the former “Good Morning America” host who might have been Rose’s heir apparent, but bizarrely flamed out at CBS earlier this year.

Meanwhile, without Rose, King hosts “CBS This Morning” with Norah O’Donnell, and female anchor duos are having a moment on morning TV. Lori Stokes was named co-host of Fox 5’s “Good Day New York” with Rosanna Scotto after Greg Kelly exited in September, and NBC’s “Today With Kathie Lee and Hoda” has been on a ratings roll.

I would posit that it pretty much is the same down the line on scandals and ethics violations. I went back to 1953, Feel free to "feel" liberals are worse, but lets not pretend it is based on evidence

You didn't even read the link you posted.  It cherry picks all sorts of people.  And it's limited to "federal politicians," overlooking the numerous governors, mayors, and state legislators and officials who have broken the law, or just been dirtbags.  And not all of them are "politicians."  Reminds me of that ridiculous list people like to post of Republicans who committed sex related crimes, which includes all sorts of people working in positions like county treasurer for Podunk, USA.

Then lets stick with the conviction list, it is more accurate as "alleged criminals and dirtbags" can be pretty subjective.
