He never smoked, drank or did drugs, and ended up with terminal lung cancer.
Odd...

But it does happen, smoking isn't the only way one gets lung cancer unfortunately.
(Did he lift in an asbestos filled cellar his whole young life, is it hereditary, etc.).

Many ways to get the nasty disease unfortunately...

Did I read lung cancer?  Was he a smoker?

Only poles, likely not saved.

Damn, never saw that coming. He always seemed to be in great shape and still a relatively young man.
Condolences to his friends and family.

The sad part is, from what I understand, that Shawn wasn't aware he had lung cancer until only this last September. By that point, it had advanced to the point where it was terminal. So sad and such a great guy. Definitely one of the good guys in the sport.

Very sad. It’s so unfair considering he never smoked and lived a healthy lifestyle. RIP

Wow that’s crazy

Did he not have any symptoms along the way? Obviously it had to be advance stages, I don’t know much about the details of cancer but I would think you would be feeling odd or not well leading up to diagnostics

In the current edition of M&F, Shawn talks about his battle with cancer...

On September 22nd, he was diagnosed with lung cancer.  He had been feeling unwell for 2 months prior, but thought it was walking pneumonia.  Weeks later, a CAT scan revealed a mass in his left lung.

That’s really sad, way too young. Goes to show time and time again you never know how much time you got, one min you are laughing, enjoying life with friends and family, doing what you love, the next you experience life changing events in a blink of an eye, and you are gone   :'(

It's crazy, it is very hard to image what he had gone through in his last 75 days of dear life!
A common psychology model has 5 stages of dying, Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance.
Can you imagine going through these in such a short period...
When I first read "Shawn Perine- RIP"
I made a quick search, and there were no articles about his illness, in this age of endless info, his illness didn't give oppurtunity for news to spread...

It wasn't that long ago that Shawn announced on Ironage that he accepted the position with the Pecker magazines. I think there was some controversy with his appointment because there were senior people ahead of Shawn. He really didn't want to move to the west coast but that was required to do the job. Everything seemed to be going well for Shawn until his illness appeared. Oh, dear, what a shame.

I send my condolences to his family and close friends.

I'm fairly certain that Shawn was born in 1964, making him 53 and not 51.  I too am a bit of a historian of bodybuilding, and I remember dates.  That said, Kevin Levrone's year of birth was written as 1965 for many years, until it  suddenly changed to 1964.  Dennis James' was 1968 before changing to 1966, which he admitted at the 2010 Mr. Olympia.  He said he was 45, but I wasn't at the press conference - Wiggs told me he said that.  I just can't recall if he said "45" or "turning 45".  I believe Dennis month of birth is May.

I digress.

This thread is nothing but sheer depression to me.  As someone who had the pleasure of meeting Shawn in 2007 when he was training with Phil Heath in Gold's Gym Sahara, I can honestly tell you that Shawn had a lifestyle that a monk would consider ascetic.

This is depressing beyond belief to me.
