Mike Tyson bench press claims
« on: January 17, 2018, 04:47:44 AM »
This is from Tysons new boom Iron Ambition I'm reading Now about him and Cus.
Here he claims that at 13 years old he was benching 250lbs for ten reps.

He specifies it was on a machine, though. Not quite the same as free weights.

Im not going to tell him he's lying, and possibly its true...
A buddy of mine was a freak as a freshman in HS (14 years old) was doing 225 for 10.
He was unique, bones and tendon strength off the charts, had the biggest arms in HS at 14.

When I got my 1st Crusher from IronMind (#1) I would get a rep or two (and it was a struggle) I give it to this dude and he's clicking away reps (handles touching/clicking) like he had a Walmart gripper.
(Must have been mid 20's by that point and not even training anymore).

Total and absolute horseshit.

And anyway, he has no idea what he’s saying. He says it’s on a machine but then says some guy suggests he start with 135. That’s exactly an Olympic bar and a 45 on each side. If the “machine” is a Smith machine, a 45 on each side is NOT 135. Considerably less. Plus the resistance is counterbalanced, making it easier, still.

Whatever the apparatus was, I’d bet my bank account Mike’s ROM, rep speed and control was horrific, as well.

Tyson is a supreme specimen, but this horseshit needs to stop. Those who know, know.

It used to be said Ben Johnson could squat 5/600 pounds. I watched him lift dozens of times during his prime and Ben’s depth was quarter rep and he struggled with poundages well under 400.

Yes, every champion of whatever sport they play is a genetic outlier.

what's funny about that they can I use to have  athletic strength standard papers you wouldn't believe how many NFL football players can bench 400

Of course at that level you have to be. Especially as one of the hardest hitting boxers ever.
There is nothing average with him.

Big difference between a large NFL player and a 220-pound boxer. As well, a majority of football players give a MUCH greater priority to weight training/strict strength training than do pugilists.

C’mon.

Years ago, a guy who was connected with various boxing camps as a S/C coach mentioned that he'd seen Tyson get a hard mid #300's bench around the time of the first Holyfield fight, which is believable. As an aside, Lennox Lewis's claimed best was #380 at around #240 which is believable too.

This is a close approximation of the machine he claimed he did it on, they were common in high schools and other government places that needed a gym -
