Cardio
« on: January 22, 2018, 05:16:14 AM »
When do you do it? How much? I'm doing 15-20 minutes 3-4 days a week usually on the revolving stair master at a pretty good clip. I feel like it deflates me after weight training. Takes all the blood out of the muscles I trained. I'm trying too pack on a few more pounds is this a hindrance? My off days my schedule is ridiculous so I need to weight train and cardio same days.

What you were saying about being deflated after the cardio... I feel the same way but I think by recirculating the blood it gets the lactic acid out and gets fresh oxygen into the blood.. purely Bro science

I've been running 2-3 miles BEFORE weights for like 9 months now .. best thing I've ever done for my physique.  I've never stayed this lean before without severely restricting my diet.  Now I'm eating plenty of rice, fruit, beans, etc and probably staying around 9-10%.  I'm natty too

Strength took a little hit but who cares .. I'm just going for the health look

If you to want push the envelope strength wise, waiting a few hours between cardio and weights will let you recover. These days I’ve been doing what you do. It’s nice to get it all done in one shot.

Been doing a lot of treadmill running lately as the winter in the Northeast has been pretty fucking brutal.

Typical easy run is about 40 to 45 minutes, start with walking, work up to about 8 mph and hold it for a while. Work it back down to walking, essentially a bodybuilding pyramid routine but with running.

Usually do one speed day a week 5x800m at 9mph and a few 200s at 10mph. Also do a 90 minute long run on the weekend at about 7.5mph.

You can run 90 minutes at 7.5 MPH?  You are a really good runner.  That's an 8 minute pace! That's about 11 plus miles. Just amazing. 5 x 800 at 6:40 mile pace. Cooking!  What do you run a recreational neighborhood 5 K in?  I'm betting in the 18 to 19 minute range. Not too many people are good distance runners and are bodybuilders. Good going.

I've never been able to walk at 5 MPH. A 12 minute mile means I have to do a slow jog.

I've walked 6 days last week in addition to lifting. I think waking for extended periods is magic for fat loss. I walked about 25 miles for the week. Fast walking and not a stroll. Around 3.8 MPH. Many walks were over an hour.

I’m a member of New York Rd. runners. I run in their races and occasionally some in upstate New York near the Albany area. I’ve only been training seriously for about two years. Before that I used to just jog recreationally without even looking at a watch. I pretty much got into it because I was too beat up to do martial arts anymore.  Had I known how many women are at these races, I would’ve gotten into it way sooner.

I can assure you I didn’t get to those numbers overnight. My first half marathon was run in 2:01:00. I did the same one this summer in 1:37:00. I did a Half yesterday in Central Park in 1:39:00. That course is tough, nothing but Hills. Haven’t run a 5K in a while but my 10K pace is about seven minutes per mile flat. I’m really oversized for distance running. Right now I’m 185-190. Most of the guys in the front the pack weigh about 50 pounds less.  It’s not that I’m special. I just understand biomechanics and know how to train. Most people just dick around.

Right now i'm doing fasted cardio every morning for 10-12 weeks.  Treadmill or stationary bike for 45-50 mins.  The rest of the year, I probably do cardio (anytime) on average 3 times a week on top of sports I play and other outdoor fitness activities.

IMO, This is the best approach for people who are into being fit and want to stay reasonably lean year ‘round. The 400-500 cal you burn a day doing the cardio gives you some wiggle room diet wise so you don’t have to be so strict. And if you really want to get lean you only have to cut back a little.

My fast days are behind me. Last five mile race I ran was about 20 years ago and I averaged  7:07 minute miles if my memory serves me  with very little running. Maybe 15 miles a week. I ran track in high school and college but I was a quarter mile sprinter. In high school I could string together 5:30 miles but I weighed under 140lbs when I was doing that. Now I'm 190lbs at 5'8" and one year away from 60. I'm muscular and natural but damn I wish I could run well again.  Sometimes I wished I wasn't so into lifting when I have no real genetic potential for it. I have more potential in running. Last week as I wrote earlier I walked for 6 days in a row many times for over an hour. Tomorrow I will run 5 miles slow. Hoping I can split lifting with running. It's a tough thing to do.

You be surprised what you could still do. It’s just a matter of easing back into it. I know a guy who is 62 and still Runs 21 minute 5K’s. You just can’t give warming up the short shrift. Start off walking then walk / jog then jog jog and then pick up the pace. The treadmill is actually very good for that as it allows you to pick up speed in a very controlled manner.

I think I'll keep the post workout cardio and add an extra day of running. Sometimes I get up in the morning and run up and down the stairs 100 times. Awesome for calfs. Sometimes I hold dumbbells in my hands.

I use too run the 800, 400, 4x800, and 4x400. I was really lean and fast. I always wanted to be big and muscular though.

About 5 years ago I went on a running kick for about 6 weeks. I entered a 5K and ran 22minute something for the run. A lot of these older runners were amazing runners in their younger years. For a 62 year old to run a 21 minute 5K is not a common thing.  The average 62 year old is a mess. Many guys in their 20's, 30's and 40's have no idea what's it like to be 60 after a lifetime of work and raising a family takes a toll. It's truly rare to see a muscular natural 60 year who has endurance. Every young man thinks somehow age won't effect them because they see a few exceptions but it gets to all of us eventually.
