Starbucks Closing 8,000 Stores For An Afternoon, For Racial Bias Education

Starbucks is closing thousands of stores across the U.S. on the afternoon of May 29 to conduct "racial-bias education geared toward preventing discrimination in our stores," the company said in a statement.

The coffee shop chain has been criticized and protested against after two black men were arrested last week at a Starbucks in Philadelphia, where they were quietly waiting to meet someone. Starbucks employees called 911 after one of the men, who had not yet purchased anything, asked to use the bathroom, and then remained at the shop.

Other customers recorded the arrest, and protested that the men hadn't done anything wrong. They pointed out that white customers were allowed to sit without buying anything without being handcuffed.

Starbucks has apologized for the incident, and CEO Kevin Johnson said he had a "goal of doing whatever we can to make things right," and promised "any necessary changes to our practices that would help prevent such an occurrence from ever happening again."

On Monday, Johnson met with the two men who were arrested.

"I've spent the last few days in Philadelphia with my leadership team listening to the community, learning what we did wrong and the steps we need to take to fix it," Johnson said in the company statement on Tuesday. "While this is not limited to Starbucks, we're committed to being a part of the solution. Closing our stores for racial bias training is just one step in a journey that requires dedication from every level of our company and partnerships in our local communities."

Didnt say he was wrong in telling them to leave.  He was wrong for thinking the company would back his decision and not get rid of him.  That's what I'm trying to tell you guys.

One of their spokespeople said that she spent many hours there in law school just using wifi. That starbucks is a community business that encourages people to "drop in". What the fuck? I wish "the right" would get as organized and do a few sit ins and not buy anything. See how quickly they get shown the door. This madness has to stop. When I get to a place that makes me feel uncomfortable I stop going. How long until the silent masses stop going to these places? Or, are we really outnumbered by the freaks?

Depends on the city and place. There are several Starbucks near me with black baristas and black clientele, sometimes 50-80% of them are black and professional.

I’m giving you the facts. There isnt a single Starbucks in a predominantly black area of New York City, the largest market in the country.

Don’t take my word for it. Google Starbucks locations Manhattan and see how many there are north of 96 Street.

I’m sure there are a few black professionals who patronize Starbucks but they are a tiny minority of the total customer base.

You don't seem to get it.  It was simply 2 guys sitting in a coffee house waiting for their friend to arrive....most people don't order food and drinks until the whole party is there.  Its just good manners.  

The store manager made the mistake of not letting sleeping dogs lay...and now he's unemployed and getting death threats.  I find the whole situation stinks but it is what it is.
