All that is above my head. They may want to get some footing before venturing off into new dealerships for their new models... you could be right but it could just be a sound business decision
Think of it like this. Hyundai hired people from the German and Euro brands---hired the head of BMW M Division, hired a guy from Audi, hired a ton of designers. Hyundai wants the future of their Genesis brand to be this:
https://www.genesis.com/us/en/genesis-future-vehicles-2018-concept.htmlNow, a person walking into a luxury brand wants a certain type of treatment, especially if they want to buy what's above. The person looking to spend 60-100k on a car, doesn't want to reminded that there is Hyundai Sonata in the same dealership---or the people who buy said vehicle, or to reminded that they once drove a Hyundai Sonata.
It's like going into a 5 star restaurant that has the other side as McDonalds. Filet Mignon on one side, and Chicken Mcnuggets on the other, it just doesn't go together.
Another idea is for GM to sh*tcan Cadillac brand, break off Escalade into a “sub brand” with premium products and continue to sell “Escalade” branded XT5, XT4 + current Escalade and variants. This would mean killing the CT6 and CTS which would be a shame.
It is easier to sell high dollar crossover/suv lineup at average franchised dealer vs being a stand alone luxury brand store with the product to back up premium $$$.
CTS has been discontinued.
If GM were to do anything, they should have made the Corvette a brand a long time ago. The domestics screw themselves because they have no foresight, still inflexible corporate mentality, and either build things too late, or don't build them at all. They killed off the Fiero because they didn't want it to step on the Corvette's toes. They didn't push for the El Miraj to be built by Cadillac, or the concept before that. They had a Bentley Conti GT fighter in the works, they killed off their V12 due to the economic meltdown
