Detroit Knows How To Build Trucks
« on: June 05, 2018, 03:15:54 PM »
There are some very impressive trucks coming out of Detroit.

2019 Silverado High Country
Will have the choice of four all new engines:
5.3-liter V8
6.2-liter V8
3.0-liter Duramax six-cylinder turbodiesel.
2.7-liter four-cylinder turbo -

The 2.7 produces impressive power for a four cylinder, (310 hp) and torque (348 lb-ft).  With peak torque available from 1500 rpm to 4000 rpm.

The Silverado is 1.6 inches longer and has a four inch longer wheelbase than it's predecessor. Despite this, the truck’s weight has been cut by up to 450 pounds due to extensive use of high strength steel and aluminum.

Looks like they took Fords ecoboost and put it in a Tundra.

Chevy Silverado is the most often stolen truck in USA.

4 cylinder truck, wtf!!  You can’t tow anything with that. It defeats the purpose of having a truck.  Is this what happens when a woman becomes ceo?
So ford comes out with a 6 cylinder f150...

Toyota landcruisers usually have four cilinder diesels, and that concept works just fine since many decades

Not everyone needs a truck with sportscar acceleration.....

I agree but trucks were meant to be workhorses. I understand that some people just use trucks to drive around town.  The beauty in having a truck (for me at least) is that if I need to tow something, haul lumber, help a friend move etc I have all those capabilities. With only four cylinders good luck hauling something.  Basically my take on it is why buy a truck, because they are rediculously expensive, if you don’t intend to use it as one.

I have a 2.7l ford. It pulls my 21 foot bass boat like a boss. I went with it because I drive 40k miles a year to fishing tournaments and it still gets 20mpgs towing that heavy boat.

I agree, but often I get the impression that many trucks are about bragging rights, status and prestige
The more cilinders, and horse power, the better it seems

I like such work horses, this one only has 205 hp:

But it's what the market wants, ever more luxury in full size pick ups. Companies have to build what buyers are looking for

Seems like torque would be the most important thing in a truck.

Sadly, coming from the UK I don't get to see these impressive beasts on the road... :(  Culturally speaking they've just never been a 'thing' - maybe due to the smaller roads or something.  But a lot of people growing up around the same time as me will clearly remember 3 famous trucks - aah the smell of nostalgia...

1)  The Fall Guy's truck

2)  The truck from Back to the Future

3)  But the most badass truck - the fantasy ownership one - was the beast from Lethal Weapon that pulled the clifftop house down

Look at that skinny front wheel  :o

Gas prices are going up again. May impact truck market
