Send in the Clowns! "Unpresidented Brass Band, a marching band created about a year and a half ago in response to the political climate, is organizing the event "Send in the Clowns!" which encourages "colorful folk" to protest Patriot Prayer's Saturday rally."

"I love being colorful and silly," band organizer Miles Thompson said, "and that's something that can really go a long ways towards distracting from violence and towards poking fun at things and making things a little less serious." This group has the right idea, IMO.

"The protest, billed ostensibly as a rally for free speech and campaign event for Joey Gibson, the leader of Patriot Prayer and Republican U.S. Senatorial candidate from Vancouver, saw hundreds of his supporters, many of whom came from out of state, bussed in from across the border decked out in helmets, crash pads and shields festooned with the Confederate battle flag.

But despite weeks of heated rhetoric, the protest — which was organized by right-wing Patriot Prayer and countered by groups on the left — resulted in little violence between the two groups. Past clashes have quickly devolved to open fistfights and mayhem.

They were met by counter-protesters from a coalition of organizations on the left including a group called Popular Mobilization, which formed recently specifically to counter Gibson's protest, another group dressed up as clowns and a cadre of antifascist activists commonly known as antifa."

Since some folks like cal everything they don't agree with, 'fake news', I thought it would be more interesting to look at this event from the views of those who actually participate/attended as opposed to news commentators opinions.

They remained mostly peaceful because the police were out in a large show of force and they did their job this time.  They kept Antifa on one side of the street and the Patriots on the other.  It wasn't the antifa suddenly decided to become pacifists.

I'd have to look back at my comments in this thread, but it seems highly unlikely we agree, since you have a position/bias on this matter and I do not. All I see is a bunch of activists in sometimes angry discourse on the streets of Portland today at a rally. Reminds me of the protesters in the 60's, only this time it's less violent, thank goodness.

I think I already mentioned this, but my favorite part of today's rally is the clowns.....you know, the one's actually wearing clown clothing. All those other 'clowns' with axes to grind are just ridiculous regardless of which group they represent.

While all this was going on, I was safe at home 12 miles away, pretending to be a stone mason. I tore up part of the cement paver patio in the backyard, leveled it and reinstalled the pavers.  Now that's something to be proud of.   I'm so tired and sore, I didn't need to go to the gym since I've already had a good workout.

That's your choice. I watched the videos and read the comments before I posted them. I tried to present all sides. It may seem like indifference to you, but it's not. Of course there isn't anything extreme about loving your country and appreciating your president (when they deserve it). Setting up and attending rallies with a sure promise of violence and hateful demonstrations is extreme, which is why it is a fringe/crazy activity regardless of the position of the participants. Believe what you want, but it's impossible to have a fight unless there are opposing sides. Fighting with yourself is really really crazy!

Perhaps you're right about the quotes. I neglected to cite who said it....ya' know, like their Twitter handle. Come on, when something has quotation marks around it, it's a quote. It'd be really strange to quote oneself in this type of non-academic situation.

Believe what you want about Antifa, it makes no difference to me. All I know is there has to be more than one impassioned opinion/perspective to fuel aggressive and violent combat.
