^^ Conker, the potential ruin is not economic, it's the fact that there are a lot of hungry families here already. We don't export much, as everyone is eating it. I think at one stage, maybe soon again, we were importing maize from around the world. This drop in production is scary shit. People may literally get eaten, if the decline continues or worsens for a mere 2 more quarters.
Ous are hungry here.
Yes, if local food production massively decreases, the prices of what's available will sky-rocket. Those on low incomes will suffer the most.
Already, a 30 % reduction in agriculture is huge, and that's already
before any land seizures have taken place.
I've already seen the frenzy when bottles of water run out from local stores, I can imagine something similar happening with food.
Coupled with all this, there's also the risk of the currency taking a massive hit when the first farms are seized, which in itself will increase prices of everything.
Then there's also still the continued risk of a ratings downgrade to junk status on the local currency which would lead to 150 billion having to immediately be disinvested from the country.
It's easy for some people to comment who don't live in SA, but this is a disaster which SA might never recover from.
