Las Vegas weekend... Not the place I remember
« on: September 17, 2018, 06:56:51 PM »
I used to go to Las Vegas a lot in the late 80's early 90's and about 4 times a year until about 10 years ago. I could see the changes even then from personal to impersonal. From comping for gambling to 6 card decks. But this weekend was just bad. First, it was crowded due to the fight. I stayed at the MGM Grand where the fight was held, (Booked the room way before the fight was announced) and it was also Mexican Independence weekend so with Nascar on top of that it was packed. That's ok. But Vegas used to be happy making money from the gambling, and keeping other costs decent. Not anymore. $65 for a lunch buffet for 2. $8 cans of soda and $14 airline bottles of alcohol in the stocked fridge in the room. No coffee machine so if you want coffee without getting dressed and going downstairs... $18. . . $40 resort fee, $3 charge to use a credit card in a cab, 2 drinks before the Gabriel Iglesias show was $40. It's just getting ridiculous. Sad to see that happen to what used to be a cool place

When I was bartending out there around 2008, where I was working a vodka redbull was $18 and a Corona was $12 ;D

We stayed mid-week at the Stratosphere in July after drining though an amazing monsoon.  What the phukken phukk of all phukks is a resort fee?   ::)  They all seem to charge it after advertising $29/night.
We ate at a buffet by the old strip and were surprised by the quality and selection.  There seemed to be much less cigarette smoke than there was less than ten years ago.

I stayed at Harrah’s in ’99 or so to see the great Ed Coan lift.  It was $19.99/night plus tax – a real bargain.

I don't know if it was a cup or a pot. The fact is they don't provide a coffee maker in the room, you are left with  2 options. Get dressed and go down to starbucks for $7 or order room service for $18. I have stayed in $50 a night hotel rooms with coffee makers and 500 a night rooms with coffee makers. In the MGM.. no option for making it in the room. $18 room service for coffee

Technically true. I gambled all of 1 hour from Thursday to Monday. Made $180 but it didn't offset the ridiculous prices

I stay at Caesars and they have coffee makers in the rooms.  As far as everything else goes, yeah, the place is a zoo and like most tourist traps will gouge for all it can.  Fun place though, I go a few times a year.

I was thinking of visiting vegas when I'm over in America later this year Think i'll have to give it a miss
as i cant afford them prices.

Airbnb is a way better option,  just rent out a house or condo for Vegas, no resort fees there.

And spend a fortune on cabs or uber to get to the strip?  Forget that. Pay the fee, and take in all it has to offer.  Cost of doing business.

AGNOSTIC, It's good to see and hear your complaints about Las Vegas and the Strip in partcular.

And I totally agree that now-a-days ..... the Strip is a total rip-off and should be avoided like the plague.

The 'bosses' know me well down there because I loudly let them know that they are "foo-king-up" this town.

This fook-up all started a few years bach when MGM acquired a good number of the Strip hotels .... which could best be described as a monopoly.

When that happened room rate were $39 a nite plus the appropriate tax....And you got free parking.

But now those same rooms are $150+ a night plus the taxes, plus a parking fee and a so called Resort Fee.

And to put some icing on the cake ... you ae not aware thah that room advertised at $150 a night does not include the tax, the parking, and the biggest rip-off of  all ... the resort fee.

And now they are stealing even more of your money in the casino by "offering" 2 - 1 win  for a blackjack instead of 3 - 2.

Plus they are all installing 'continuous shuffle' machines which give the house an even larger advantage.

And if you want a drink while playing at the tables ... expect that cold beer you've been looking forward to ... to be delivered in a 6 ounce plastic cup.

The Strip has turned to s h i t, but as of this date ... you can still get decent play at the locals casinos, but they have also followed suit by charging  a rip-off, hotel room,  resort fee.

My best advice ....

Do Not believe any advertised Las Vegas, hotel room, rates until you read the bottom line. And eventhen ....  that bottom line will not include the paking fee

Avoid the Strip entirely.

Complain  loudly when you are getting ripped off at the tables.
Avoid Las Vegas entirely and go to Hawaii.

"Resort Fees" are usually claimed to pay for the golf course (I HATE golf) and the like.  I have not been in over a decade because I don't much care for the residentially challenged and/or the pamphlet-slappers (those itty bitty Hispanic looking folks trying to get you to take their guidebooklettes to hookers.

Las Vegas could not attract families so they went back to being a pile of shit and we all know what shit attracts.

You're right about the advertised price. I have been to Vegas since the resort fee crap started so I knew going in. I've also done the $20 check in tip and got the resort fees waived. No luck this time. But yeah, I don't mind paying prices for quality service or experience but I just got the impression they were more focused on getting as much money as possible for the smallest effort on their part. When I go back to Vegas, I will consider the other options to stay there. We have some friends that live there and are in the industry. They always take us to places far off from the strip and we have a good time for half the price.

Yesterday in 7/11 (in Thailand) , 2 cans of ice espresso cost me 30 Thai Bahts (around $ 1)  ;D
1 cup of flat black = 14 baht

If you've never been, I would suggest it just for the experience. You can do Vegas on a budget. Either staying in North Las Vegas, or some of the cheaper casino's on the strip. When we go, we have the mind set to splurge and not worry about the prices.. but it is getting to the point where even if you can afford it, it's almost insulting.

Going for a fun trip to Las Vegas is like paying homage to American prostitutes and scammers. Hmmm, I'll think twice...

It’s another industry that has had its infrastructure rendered obsolete by the Internet. You can play those video slots games just as easily on your iPhone and save the trip.

I only went once, like 3 years ago for a trade show for work, fucking hated every minute of Vegas, gambling sucks, beggars suck, the heat sucked, it all sucked.
Wont go back, unless I have to for work...
