GoPro Hero 7
« on: October 06, 2018, 08:29:54 AM »
My GoPro Hero 7 just arrived which I'll be using on my bike and kayak excursions and family use when they free-fall from 18,000 feet.

It's anazing what they can put in a little camera that's about half the size of a pack of cigarettes!

This is the 7 so it's supposed to be better than the 2,4,5, and 6.

I have no idea what happened to the 3.

Years ago when I first got a Hero 2, I shot some Del Ray beach house scenes but those shots came out blurry so I gave that camera to one of the nephews who 'discovered' that the picturs only turned out blurry because I failed to take off the little transparent lens covering that prevents the lens from getting scratched during shipping.

They are in the movie production business so they know that type of lens cover shit. But they don't know the first thing about falling off horses.

There was a movie out a few years ago called "HARDCORE HARRY" that was entirely shot with one of these little Hero cameras, but it wasn't shot with a 7 ..... so I'm thinking about taking this little 7 to Hollywood and make the next big EPIC!

Maybe Rocky 8.

Are there any GetBiggers on this board who own and use a Hero?

Here's the type of photos that GoPro Heros take ....This photo was taken from one of the GoPro ads, but you don't have to be a camera pro to get that kind of photograph.

YES, KWON. I saw YORKI's video on YouTube.

I just spoke to my nephew who is presently on set and he told me that they are using these little cameras a lot lately within the production of major motion pictures.

He had one attached to his head prior to filming a big scene and the camera guy merely said a few words to the camera which started "rolling film" as we used to say in the good old days.

I can give my 7 voice commands also but so far I have yet to learn what it understands so I haven't spoken to it yet.

DRONES are another subject I'm interesred in, so that will be on my SANTA list.

I have a knock off of the Hero 2 that I got on Amazon during a Cyber Monday 3 years ago.  Camera, and like 14 pieces in a case for $79 if I remember right.  I put one of the mounts it came with on my kayak, and went out on the lake for about two hours.  I was skeptical how the quality would be for sure.  Got home, and hooked it up to my 4k tv.  It was almost creepy how "real life" it looked.   Everything was just crystal clear as if I never left the lake.

Here's my question for you Go Pro guys.  When I played it back it played everything backwards, how the hell do you make these things loop so it plays from the beginning?  The only downside to my $79 risk is that I can't figure out how to do it since it came with no gosh damn instructions. :-[

Wow!  I didn't know they had become that advanced.  I bet they have ideas from when they first put these on the market, and just keep adding a little on each new release to sell more cameras.  I did see a 4k video they put on YouTube b4 the release of the last one, and it was absolutely amazing.  Some of the action scenes were intense.....like to the point you were doing bike jumps or wing suit diving on your own.

I hate smart phones and social media with a passion as far as what it's done to society and lost privacy, but it's crazy to know that the camera on my phone is way better than a $450 Olympus I bought ten years ago.

MYT1, Yea ... I have the same problem about 'instructions". My 7 came with a little pamphlete which is absolutely unreadble unless you gave it to Antman.

So I did a Hero 7 Instruction Manual search and found the Hero 7 manual on the nt that was large enough to read and explained in detail.

Your Hero 2 was the first Hero I purchased (see above) and I was contacted by the GoPro people that I could get a $100 discount towards the purchase of the 7, but that 2 was no longr mine so I simply paid full price ($399).

BTW .. If you want to get that $100 discount towards the purchase of the 7, you can go to the GoPro website and get the details.

They don't care if your 2 is broke and in 76 pieces or more. Send it in and you can get that 7 for $299 plus some tax that you gotta pay.

I'll let you know if I discover a fix for your  looping problem.

Would definitely appreciate the help on the looping issue.  Not really a problem so much as I just don't know how it's done as far as the buttons to push to find the function on the menu.

BTW, I think you misread my post a little.  I don't have a real Go Pro.  It is a knock off.  I can't remember, but I think it was Geek _____  .  It came with 14 pieces of extras, like attachments and stuff, not the camera in 14 pieces.  LOL  I woulda returned that shit to Amazon the next day if that was the case.  ;D

MYT1, I forgot to mention that I bought a JOLT 4K video camera similar to a GoPro Hero for $35 (half price at Fry's)  4 months ago, and I have a feeling that the camera you have is also a JOLT.

The quality of the 7 is way beyond better than the JOLT which feels like it will break while inserting the battery.

But I have to see how the videos/pitures compare between the JOLT and the HERO  7.

And yea, I have a number of expensive cameras here at home which I don't think will be used much more now that I have this 7.

Contemporary drones are computer assisted radio controlled aircraft.

The on-board computer auto pilot does the grunt work of keeping the thing stable in the air.

They have even flown them across the Atlantic.

The plane below was an amateur project.

MYT1, Yea, these cameras come with a shit-load of extra pieces which I never use, so I hane all those pieces in a box waiting for one of the nephews to ask, "Do you have the little camera piece that does this ....?'

And I'm sure that little piece would be in there.

I just ordered a lanyard and a little rubber housing that fits snuggly around the 7, so now I can wear it around my neck and avoid dropping it on the pavement ($19)

And all major companies (Apple in particular) hold back 'advances' so that they can add new stuff to their product for years to come.

Big thing held back at present is a cell phone enbeded in one of you molars. (Tooth-Phone)

SYNC, Drones are used extensively during military operations.

I don't know how factual this was but a couple of years back  there as a movie that spied on insurgents woithout being noticed because that 'drone' looked like a humming-bird.

Nah, I just looked found the "thank you" insert that came with it.  It is called a GeekPro 2.0.  Odd they send a glossy color print thank you note, but no instructions.  I just found some review videos on YouTube.  Maybe one of those will have some guidance.  This is it https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LYUS5MT  I never even knew the damn thing was wifi enabled until just now.  I'm going to have to actually create a gmail account to download my first ever app to my S7......like I said, not a technology fan.  LOL!

mYT1, TECH fan? ME neither.

I know what a CLOUD is but how the hell do I upload stuff up there?

And how the hell do I get it back?

Same with WIFI.

I am a dumb-shit when it comes to the CLOUD and WIFI  BUT I could teach anyone the basics of Quantum Mechanics.

Your thread got me to dig the damn thing out, and look through the case.  I haven't kayaked or even lifted for over 2 years since I tore my distal biceps tendon off the bone, so I had it buried away.  The case had a couple of mounts, zip ties, extra double sided tape, a bunch of little shit that I have no idea what it's for, and a "chest strap" that probably would barely fit my 5 year old niece

I hope you were kidding about the whole tooth phone thing.  If not, things are getting way out of control with this shit.  So wtf, would link to your eye and when you bite down hard it takes a pic?  Bite down twice for video?  Wouldn't put it past these fucking companies, and that people would be dumb enough to get it.

Interesting stuff you guys are posting.  I haven't posted for a long time, but this makes me remember what I like about this place.  Total one stop shop.  BBing and all thing fitness/weights related, politics, tech, financial, business, etc. related stuff all at one site.   8)

Oh yeah, can't leave out Wes and the fact that it allows us to learn what it was really like back in 1920.

MYT1, That 'chest strap' may possibly be a head strap.

If you go to the GoPro web site and scroll way down you might find a link to the GoPro nerds who would be more than willing to solve your backwards/looping problem.

Do you see the video backwards in the camera itself or does it only occur while using the GoPro app?

It just plays back in reverse.  So for instance, when I went to watch the kayak video back; it started playing from when I docked to get out of the kayak and then plays me rowing in reverse from where I came from.  I can't use the GoPro app as it is not actually a GoPro brand camera, but merely a knock off.  Click the link I posted where it's on Amazon, and you'll see what I mean.  Appreciate the suggestions nonetheless.

As for the strap, it came in a baggie marked chest strap.  Maybe they mislabeled it.  Head straps are usually elastic in nature, and this was not.  If it is a head strap I wouldn't trust it to not fall off if I was doing something active and got sweaty.  It would either fly off, or slip down and blind me.  Either way es no bueno!

OK, Understood.

In case anyone out there plans to buy a GoPro Hero the company offers a form of insuance to replace your Go Pro Hero 7 (only) under certain conditions. They call is GoPro+ for $4.99 a month and it includes other stuff such as unlimited photo storage and up to 35 hours of video storage plus a 20% discount on Go Pro stuff and a Go To The Head Of The Line Pass if you have to talk to a Go pro expert.

Still checking on your looping problem

My four year old nephew says that, "He may be holding his camera up-side-down or maybe backwards!"

He is my GO-To-know-It-All when it comes to this stuff and in particular ... how to use the remote to see TV shows. and other stuff that that  damn remote controls thrughout the house.

i like cameras as a hobby. Have a blackmagic cinema camera, sony a7sii, gimbals, drones, gopros.

I use hero 4 blacks on gimbals for downhill mountain bike clips. i use a special chest plate to hold the extra weight.

The 7 is good but the stabilisation isnt as good vs gimbal. It cant handle micro jitters. It also crops the sensor so you cant just bang it around a lot as it will impact quality. It has a few bugs to sort out, people claiming its freezing when on 4k and using hyperstable.

I'll grab one as a second cam when im riding. id place this on my.helmet or mount it on my back to film riders behind me.

MAYDAY, Thanks for that info.

I have a friend whose life in centeted around taking life threatening risks. I'm planning to lend him my Hero 7 on his next jump from 25,000 feet which will require  lot of equipment he normally never jimps with.

His most recent jump to the best of my remembrence was 18,000 feet and he said that it took all of 90 seconds to land on the ground.

I recommended that he try flying with a Wing-Suit but he had a friend who hit the ground so he is putting that off for a later date.

Last Saturday (Connor fight day) I loaded my Hero 7 ..... with the battery and the "card" which will be holding my photos and videos ... down to the Strip to try it out and here are some personal initial thoughts about that amazing little camera.

First ....   that little card was no bigger than my smallest finger-nail and I was thinking that there is no way that little card will be able to hold the photos/videos that I planned to shoot.

And since all GoPro hero cameras are exceptionally small and could be lost or mis-placed easily after a couple of drinks in more than a couple of casinos, I looked for the box of old Hero camera supplies that are provided with every Hero purchase .... and  I managed to find a bright yellow, 6 inch hand-grip that would allow any GoPro camera to float to the surface (if it was attached) if you happened to drop it while surfing, water-skiing or using it during any under or over aqua activity.

So with that little black camera attached to that long, bright, yellow hand-grip ...... my first stop was at the WYNN where I took my first 'footage' inside the casino only to discover that  once I pushed the button to turn it on, I had to make some choices as shown on the camera's little touch screen.

Those choices appeared on that little screen in a very small format, but I dId manage to see what appeared to represent a video camera and upon touching that ... a small red light was apparently letting me know that a video shot was underway.

So I did my Spealberg impression and started shooting.

But since I never did read any instructions, I had no idea what button I had to push to stop it.

I guess I guessed right because the red light went out which meant that the video shot was over and then I had to discover what button turned  this Hero 7 off completely.

Can the Karma control all those  camera functions itself?

All basic dumb stuff with simple solutions that I gradually grew familiar with as I strolled through the casino ala Spealberg ....and then outside along the Strip that was full of every kind of human being imaginable most of whom appeared to be here to see Connor get his ass whipped.

By the way, around 4 PM Saturday afternoon, you could have placed a $100 bet on Connor to win and receive $250 if he did manage to do so.

Now I kinda realize that I woild appreciate the GoPro KARMA if I can control this Hero 7 entirely  without the need to actually touch any of the buttons on the camera itself ....  even though the KARMA's stable capability is not needed when you shoot with the 7.

I also will have to read more about the verbal commands so that I can avoid any camera movement while searching for and pushing the appropriate buttons.

Pretty damn basic stupidity here, but  it is the first time I have used a GoPro since the first week that the Hero2 came on the market.

And I was shooting these Hero 7 shots along the Strip prior to reading the GoPro Hero 7 Manual which I had to download from the GoPro site with the intent to read it thoroughly before my next photo shoot.

MYT1, Still no word to pass on about that looping prblem.

There is irony buying a 7 and then buying a karma gimbal to control it lol :)

They are easy to use. The biggest tip is setup and leave it how you set the view and framerate.

the button on top starts and stops recording. that is the only button you need.

keep it simple. Trust me, if you are a noob your footage will look like shit anyway because you dont know how to take proper video and will overshoot.

The best advice i gave myself was to create no longer than 15s video edits. Doing that made me plan shots and cut.out useless crap making editing 100x faster as i dont have oodles of.footage to go through. Plus in 15s it was all key moments and others watching were engaged. There is a big difference between taking footage for yourself and footage you want others to see. Footage for me is longer, more boring, overshot on purpose. Footage for others is very short.

Look at Jon Olsson's vlogs for some inspiration on how he uses his.gopro footage on skis, boats, cars.
