The problem with all Japanese hard style is way too much wasted motion. Blocking is a waste of time. Boxers don't block punches they either absorb them or bob and weave so they can't be hit. Pulling the hands back before striking makes the punch like 3X slower than just throwing the punch. No grappling so if you go to the ground you are screwed. Pounding the fists and fingers to bloody pulps to toughen them up is counter productive to health and dexterity of the fingers in the future. So overall Japanese Karate sucks.
Learn to grapple (wrestling, BJJ, Judo, etc) to win on the ground or stand up grappling and learn Muay Thai for stand up. Muay Thai and BJJ would probably be the perfect combo to use for hand to hand combat. Of course, as mentioned earlier a gun is the best defense but that is not always available. This is bodybuilding related as Arthur Jones carried a pistol on him at all times.
