Best system out there.
It's a tough system but it tears up the body pretty bad.  If you are into hard Japanese martial art styles I would put Mas Oyama's Kyokushin Karate above Shotokan.  Oyama's first art that he modeled Kyokushin on was Shotokan though.  Oyama had horrible arthritis when he got old probably from all the makawara board striking.

Seconded dan18.

Shotokan karate is great........against someone else using karate or something similar. Speaking from experience, these guys do not know what to do off of their back......generally speaking of course. There are always exceptions as with anything

The problem with all Japanese hard style is way too much wasted motion.  Blocking is a waste of time.  Boxers don't block punches they either absorb them or bob and weave so they can't be hit.  Pulling the hands back before striking makes the punch like 3X slower than just throwing the punch.  No grappling so if you go to the ground you are screwed. Pounding the fists and fingers to bloody pulps to toughen them up is counter productive to health and dexterity of the fingers in the future.  So overall Japanese Karate sucks.

Learn to grapple (wrestling, BJJ, Judo, etc) to win on the ground or stand up grappling and learn Muay Thai for stand up.  Muay Thai and BJJ would probably be the perfect combo to use for hand to hand combat.  Of course, as mentioned earlier a gun is the best defense but that is not always available.  This is bodybuilding related as Arthur Jones carried a pistol on him at all times. ;D

I Guess for me these guys spend 85% of there lives doing it to what end, to have some punk shove a knife in your chest over a parking spot. yea for most its a way of life I get it but its not practical in a real world when will you ever need to use it..

I took up kickboxing years ago I teach my boys it great exercises and you can always defend yourself if needed simple art form

I agree.  I spent a lot of time doing stupid martial arts stuff when I was younger and most of it was totally a waste of time.  The likelihood it will ever be used is too small to put that much time into it.  You can learn to fight in a boxing gym (or kickboxing) and wrestle in school to get all the skills you would ever need.

I used to compete in wrestling, BJJ and trained in boxing and Kenpo so I wouldn't be too worried.

Not a good example, as that practitioner was not using Traditional Shotokan.

True but where do you think BJJ came from?

It’s all about taking all the strengths in different martial arts and boxing, wasn’t Bruce Lee the advocate for this? No true pure style is any use
