Giving advice to newbies....or not?
« on: December 16, 2018, 07:44:56 AM »
For about 6 months now I have been training at a gym with a lot of college students.
I see them pencilnecks performing endles sets on the leg extension, pushdown, pec deck you name it.
They look with both awe and disgust at me doing 400+ lbs deadlifts.....

Should I (should we?) instruct them that if they wanna getbig they got to do the powerlift movements first?
Or should we just let them figure it out themselves?

Question: do you correct bad choice of exercise/bad form ?

Asks Dr Dutch

No, it's obnoxious to give advice in a gym.

They look at me like I`m crazy if I offer advice so I now let them keep spinning their wheels and add them to the ranks of gym idiots.

Give advice if you‘re qualified to do so. And no, 15 years of gym membership does not make u qualified.

C'mon dude like a 400 lbs deadlift is something special...it was just an example, but I indeed deadlift over 400.
Could have mentioned a 240 lbs bench or a 300 lbs squat. Not that terrific huh?

But seriously: if these 18-20 yr old dudes got some REAL good advise (not from their "personal trainers" who are a joke, at leat over here in Holland.) they could be put on the right track gaining some mass.
I keep silent, but the point is that I made their mistakes too, way back when.
Aren't we obliged to do someting????

Depends on who it is. If I see a kid or a new trainee doing something wrong, I'll simply ask "do you mind If show you something?" the answer is usually "yes" if its no then its no. Nothing wrong with trying to help someone
