They were using steroids before the 40's....As I said before, steroid users are famously dishonest about their usage..
Yes, Reeves was naturally muscular but a huge difference from what he became.
The most muscular drug free guys I've ever seen are gymnasts, mostly short White guys. Some looked like competition bodybuilders. (upper body).
Some people want so badly to believe something that they ignore reality...

OLD, who was 'they"?

If 'they' means US war-time medical facilities treating US WWII miliary burn patients, I would tend to totally agree with ya, but that occured after 1940.

Don't believe all you hear about the wide scale use of roids by so-called bodybuilders during the 40's.

This guys is great.  Nick's Strength and Power is the Youtube channel.  Is he on Getbig?

Wonder what his height and weight were before he got into bodybuilding? It would be interest to see what he currently looks like. In the video, his arms look soft.

As a near adult, standing 5'11", I once weighed 144 lbs. I was a rail. Before I hit 30, I got my weight up to 225 (for a minute). On dietary trick was drinking a quart of whole unpasteurized milk direct from a farm each day. It wasn't all natural. But, I also never took a massive amount to steroids nor did I cycle them for very long or with any frequency. I took D-bol and testosterone with a doctor's prescription, once when I was in my late teens and again in my late 20's.

Not that this is any kind of comparison, because I was training for size and not competitive bodybuilding. The bulk of my life, I have maintained a weight between 175 and 195 lbs.

Seriously how did he train all those years? At 18 I had been training 2 years and got way too fat at 231, then dieted down to 185. I had abs out. 5'8'. Then coming off the diet I stayed strict and at 200 I looked better and got a lot of strength on the rebound. I could always have been leaner but i was 18 and didn't have the quality years brings either.

Roids do change the body a lot though.

I hate chiming in on serious threads, but I feel compelled to add something to this-
To begin with, this fella speaks the truth.
I  have been lifting most of my entire life(I'm 48). Did a handful of cycles during that time.
I carried around decent size and was decently strong for someone with average genetics. The heaviest I got during my "lets see how strong I can get phase " was in the low 240's. (I'm 6'0" on a good day)
My guess is that I was over 30% body fat at that time.
A couple years ago, I decided to do what I put off since my early 30's ; I wanted to see abs again.
I had a full body analysis done (InBody) when I started.
Starting weight was 221lbs, bodyfat was 28.1%. ( I thought I was in good shape)
Almost 6 months to the day later, I tested again at 168.9 lbs, bodyfat was 6.4%.
I lost 52 fucking lbs-but it was all fat and water.
However, my lean body mass increased by a pound.
What dawned on me, (and something you  never really hear about)  is how one could lose over 50 fucking pounds, but maintain all of ones strength, and actually increase skeletal muscle( though in my case only slightly).
Like this fella, I always thought I had 20lbs to lose to be "in shape"...
After this "transformation", not only did I realize just how fucking fat I was, but how much bodyfat the average in shape gym rat carries around.
However, unlike this fella, I never felt "light" or "small"...In fact, having a 30" waste again has gotten me more attention from females than I ever have in my entire life.
My takeaway from this whole experience ( I train to get laid, not for my health) is that most every female prefers me/males that are  lean.
Because Im pulling more ass than I have in my entire life, I feel a million times better than when I was "big"...
In conclusion, if I had to do it all over again, I'd lift my ass off, but always stay lean-nobody ( especially females) cares that you are 200 + lbs and you can bench 315...
My guess is that females must feel some subconscious correlation between guys with small waists that are in shape and the length of time you can bang the snot out of them-

Natural bodybuilding after a few years should just be called body maintenance. You're not building any new muscle and are just trying to maintain the muscle you've already got.
Always enjoyed Nick's content. He always comes across as being respectful and honest.

I've been watching him for years as well.  I don't know if he's on getbig but he has mentioned it in at least one of his vids.  Pretty sure Jamie Lewis (Chaos of Pain, Plague of Strength) is on here though.

That video is the most real video about natty bodybuilding I have ever seen and natties should NOT try to get cut like oldtimer said.  You just get small and weak.

I doubt it and he definitely wasn't juicing when he competed or he wouldn't have lost 75lbs and competed in the 140's.

If you are a nattie and you try to go to sub 10% bodyfat you will look like an Auschwitz survivor.

Exactly, and that's why we know almost all of these natty bodybuilders are full of shit.

He looked kind of fat at 220 but looked jacked at 190-210.  Watch his videos about him competing and he has all kinds of pics at every stage of his development.

Nick has a great YouTube page- and seems pretty honest so props to him. But dropping down to 143 means he just starved himself and lost a lot of muscle. Before I started lifting regularly I was a bicycle racer. I was asked to participate in a university study on cycle training and as part of it I was hydrostatically weighed to determine body fat. At the time I was in the middle of the race season and super lean- veins everywhere and deep abs. I tested at 162 pounds and 11.9% fat! By bodybuilding standards I guess I was obese, lol. I’m 5’9” by the way (- or 5’9.025” if Matt is reading this.)

After I started lifting heavy ( and still racing) I got to the mid 180’s and still very lean. Then growth kinda stopped- no matter what I tried I wasn’t gaining any more muscle- and I’m completely natural. From what I have read in research over the years, a gain of 20-30 pounds of muscle is about the limit for a natural-and I agree. All I do now is maintain strength and general fitness.

I really don’t see why anybody would aspire to be a natural bodybuilder anymore. You are never going to turn heads in a  contest since you are a skeleton compared to those who use. It’s just boring to watch.

Yeah, it's kind of ridiculous being the smallest guy in the building when you are on stage competing.
