While I get what you're saying about no evidence on either side, the burden of proof falls on the person making the claim. As such, the theist is making the claim that a God exists and the atheist is rejecting that claim due to insufficient evidence. I don't have to prove that X does not exist. The other has to prove that X exists.

An example:

Doctor A indicates that he has cured cancer.
Doctor B does not have to prove that Doctor A did not cure cancer.
Doctor A has to present the evidence that he cured cancer and Doctor B will either accept or reject the evidence--he doesn't have to prove Doctor A wrong.

Basically, you never have to prove that X doesn't exist because it's impossible to prove. That's like saying, "Unicorns are real because you can't prove they don't exist." Do you see the flaw in that line of thinking?

Further, I wouldn't say "one just holds an opinion." Not all opinions are created equal. There are good opinions backed by good evidence and bad opinions, which are backed up by poor reasoning and logic. Not all opinions have equal merit.

Most memorable was the house I rented while I got enough rooms ready in my current house to be able to move in, it belonged to an old couple who had lived in it their whole adult life before they died, despite never actually seeing anything (although eyes played tricks on you there, far more than usual) the place was definitely haunted, had a very uneasy feel that still makes me feel uneasy when I think of it even now, doors pushed to would suddenly creak open a few inches, lots of banging around from upstairs despite nobody being up there, one time in bed clear as day heard footsteps come up the stairs, one night in the early hours we were woke up by classical music and got up fucking terrified and found it to be my daughters toy convertible which had a radio in it that never ever worked and had been in her room for months but suddenly in middle of the night picked up clear loud signal playing classical music. Have never felt like that in a house before or since my daughter still has a fear of being left in a room alone which she developed in that house.

In the first house we lived in my 3 year old son saw what we believed to be my dead granny in his room, he came downstairs saying the woman won’t answer me as he tried to talk to her he said she looked like my mother which my granny was the absolute double of me mam

Also me mam sees a spiritualist every now and then and sometimes wor lass goes along and they have had several things told to them that the spiritualist could only know if he was truly in contact with the dead relative, too many examples to list the first one that comes to mind was when my mates Mam who is friend and neighbor to my mam and always sits smokling on her step and the spirit bloke said the exact name my dad would call her as he passed walking his dogs (some Indian name) that only two people on the planet who knew that were her and my dad
