The current state of political "debate"
« on: March 27, 2019, 04:39:28 AM »
The far left liberals and hard right Trumpers don't debate.

One side loudly lectures the other and expects them to hear and obey without question.
When that inevitablly fails, they scream insults and ridicule.
Rarely does either side try to be fair and objective. It's even rarer if someone LISTENS to the other side.

That's Primemuscle's job in this forum.  Howard will have to wait in line until Prime finally kicks the bucket.

Ok, but seriously, the % of close minded "extremist " has ballooned .
In round numbers, it avg to around 10% of each side, with 80% in the middle.
Now it's at least 40% on each side with 20% ( max) in the middle.

Please show me the source of this data.

Assuming it's not your ass, that is.

I was just making an observation based on my own personal experience.
Here's an example of the type of data I look at.
https://content.gallup.com/origin/gallupinc/GallupSpaces/Production/Cms/POLL/fwzpj9skwkah87ngt9eheq.png

In the last 5-6 years, the % of an independent is on downward trend.
Obviously, the data ( graph) isn't as drastic as my personal observation, but wtf, it's forum  ;)

I hesitate to engage becuase you have a pattern of ignoring responses and just moving to the next thing.

But social media has skewed the perception of everything.  You being exposed to more voices that were already there but unheard.

Good observation and I tend to move on and ignore things if it becomes an insult fest.

Moreso when you get owned....but we'll move on.

BUT, your point about social media changing EVERYTHING is valid.
Now, like minded people can stay conected and reinforce what they believe and want to hear.

Growing up we all listened to the same news at 6 pm given by "Uncle Walt Cronkite".
It was straight news with few "opinion analysis" by the broadcasters.

A big part of the reason I come on Get Big is to be aware of "other " poitical views.

The like-minded thing is absoltuely correct, and has been statisically proven.  While social media SHOULD (and does to an extent) expose us to more options, people do gravitate to those who align with their beliefs and just shout at that the rest.  Twitter conservatives follow mostly conservatives, looney left dicksucking green deal soy bearded douchebags follow looney left dicksucking green deal soy bearded douchebags.   I don't have a link, but have seen studies referenced.

For me, personally, the fake news generated by the media, and the manipulation of data and content by facebook and google to align with their political views is the most dangerous, since it actually influences the casual observer.

Outside of Covington / the fake "fine people on both sides" / Kavanaugh lies / fake collusion, there were things that got me concerned.

When Mitt Romney was running, there was a headline (paraphrasing here) "Ann Romney wears $1,200 suit to fundraiser".   Obviously the title was chosen to portray Romney as rich-elite, out of touch with the unfortunate folks that needed the fundraiser.  However, if you read the last line of the article it said "Michelle Obama was also in attendance, wearing "x" by designer "y" totalling $3,500.  I bet the majority of the people don't even click to read the article, but damage done.

The other was Google and the Hilary Clinton email thing that's been posted multiple times and still exists.   Every other politician you google, with "em" following autofills "email"..with HRC, it's "emoji"...the same HRC that was involved in the biggest political email scandal in our country.

There's plenty others, but folks are being manipulated.

I think a lot of this has to do with social media stilling being in its infancy, with behviors, financial models around it, all still being figured out.  It's like giving booze to someone who just got legal - they may go a bit nuts until they figure it out.

Damn good post. ;)

However, I think social media will keep making people more isolated and tribal going fwd.
For example , on most people FB pgs, they often delete ANY post or link that doesn't align with their side.

Since this is get big I'll use a BB analogy to follow up on your booze one.
Drugs started as a minor issue 50 years ago in bodybuilding.
As time went on it's gotten worse, a lot worse  :D

I'm on the fence about that.  Tribal, possibly.  Isolated, I'm not convinced.  Maybe those prone to isolation will stay that way, but I think most are communal....but honestly haven't given much thought.

To expand on what I said earlier, I think were going through an apaptive phase with all this.  Eventually it has to normalize.  It's easy to see how people can become all consumed - when the Twitter dot appears with new posts every few seconds, there's always new content to read and get all riled up.  I just don't think it's sustainable.

Good post

MSM has a lot to answer for without a doubt
It’s clearly very Leftist & Liberal & Promotes a Lot of destabilising things for society in general,
It’s very Destructive what they are Doing.

They are using the old Devide and rule principle very subtly in some cases
And Deliberately stirring up a lot of Hate.

Social media hasn’t helped as so many are addicted to it & Kind of almost Live
In / on a virtual World.

I think a lot of people have lost the art / ability to reason or think things through properly
And that goes for all sides - Almost if one says it’s White the other Has to say No it’s not
It’s off white or Cream or Black - Instead of just saying yes your correct it is White.

Still I’m in the U.K. and our Clocks go back this Saturday night
And I’m Putting Mine Back To 1940 When this Country Had Some Balls & Backbone.

I do not agree with your "both sides do it" premise.  The left is far more guilty of this.  While extremists on both sides often don't listen to each other, I think that the entire Democrat party has refused to discuss, debate, or compromise on virtually every issue.

On many topics we are told that "the debate is over" or "the science is settled", and if you don't go along with what they propose you are a racist, a science denier, or you hate women.  Conservative people are very will to discuss issues because they believe that they have the facts on their side.  This board is a good example of that.  The left is about emotions, fear, bullying, shaming, and character assassination.

Keeping score when both sides constantly do it, is no solution.
Pointing fingers at each other = circular firing squad * That's what children do.
The first step is to call out those ON YOUR SIDE, when act in a rude, gross or disgusting manner.

No, it isn't, because the Democrats stick together and stick to the plan above all else.  They don't give a fuck about hypocrisy, they don't give a fuck about the moral high ground or reaching across the isle.  They will ram through shitty bills that they haven't even read in the dead of night in order to get their way.  They play to win and take every opportunity to step on Republican's throats.  It's pretty clear to see that they view Republicans, Trump and the people that elected him as their primary enemies.  More than China, Putin, North Korea and damn sure more than Iran.

The reasons why Republicans lose is because they do exactly what you say to do.  They are in a hurry to turn on their own so they can look reasonable and mature and dignified.   Republicans are quick to vote with Dems because they foolishly think that voters will see them in a positive light for voting their conscious.  They are weak, cowardly and foolish.  They hate the thought of not being liked.  They don't play to win.  Even when they have the House, the Senate, the Presidency and the Supreme court they struggle to get shit done and let the Democrat minority push them around.  They are spineless fucking vermin.

The stakes are to high to pretend that we are living in the 1950's with all the "my esteemed colleague" bullshit.  Play to win and worry about being a nice guy later.
