Collage vs. McDonalds - what to do?
« on: April 21, 2019, 01:57:06 PM »
An employee that begins work at Mcdonalds at 17 years old can easily become a manager by 20/21..with hard work.

Mcdonalds general manager
$48,000 average with cash incentive program - $50,000.
Medical and dental benefits.
401k
Life insurance.

Mcdonalds also has a stock option plan to lock in a set stock price.

A child could work as a general manager at Mcdonalds from 19 to 26, parents agree to let him live at home as this being his college and grad school. Parents have no colege tuition, no room and board, books, etc. Child has own medical and dental.

Child spends $10,000 a year on living expenses, clothes, etc. Puts $40,000 in block stock options of Mcdonalds per year along with a few higher risk/yield stocks. At 26 years old, with average growth of Mcdonalds stock and conservative tech, at 26 years old should have over $500,000, no debt, full medical and dental and a billion dollar company international managerial position on his resume. 6 years living at home ready to enter the world

College

Average cost with room and board, books, misc per year -$60,000
Same time sending same kid to college will COST parents over $300,000.
With liberal arts major at end of college student has no skills, no resume, moves back home with parents after college or rooms with buddies.  NOT ready to enter world.

Even if your degree wasn't already worthless when you got it, it certainly would be obsolete now because when you were in school there were only 2 genders to study.

They are not worthless. I am doing good things with my degree and having a BA in Gender Studies has expanded my knowledge about many social issues.

It doesn't have to cost $300k to send your kid to college.

I sent two kids to college for nowhere near that.

One kid got an assoc. from Community college in 2 years for $5k and then onto state school for $30k for his Bachelor.

The other kid did one year community and 3 years state school plus masters (5-year program).  So $55k plus another $10k for the masters (kid got grad assistantship).

So two kids for $100k.  Both lived at home while in college.

Other than that, yes, if you work hard and save and invest money you can build a tidy nest egg working at McDs.

But you also have limited growth potential at McDonalds.  Where do you go from there?  $50k a year is entry level wages.

Is your experience working at McDonalds transferable to a higher earning job?  Where?

You could open your own burger joint with your savings.  Opening a McDs though costs $millions.

I'm not putting down your idea though.  If you are hard worker and save every nickel you could start your own biz selling burgers or a pizza shop or sub shop.

McDs are usually locally owned so not really anywhere to move up to I don't think.  You're either an owner or a store mgr or drone.

I mean you're not going to move up to McD Corporate.

I know of two people who are managers there and make great money BUT  they work an insane number of hours and have to deal with high school and college age employees calling off all the time.  One guy has had multiple heart attacks and cancer from the stress.

No, I am not joking.

I thought Gender Studies would open doors for many opportunities, since it encompasses a broad range of human experiences, which could be applied to many fields of discipline.

I was JUST talking about this the other day!  Mostly because my best friend and I worked at our local Mcdonalds as our first job back in 2000 when we were 16.  We were talking about dumb shit and I was like "dude, we should have just stayed at Mcdonalds and we'd probably be making more money now than were currently are!" lol!  Granted neither of us are struggling (I made $72,000 last year, and he's a bank manager who most likely makes more), but chilling in the grill and flipping burgers was the shit back then!  Especially considering that they gave us all the free food we could take home at the end of the night! lol

You have to be joking and expecting to be savaged on this site for saying this.  You just want to see the witty replies, right?

No.

I just don't care what people say about me.

If someone does not like my degree, so be it.

I don't have anything to prove to the people on here.

And unless you are a college Professor perpetrating the scam your job title does not have the words gender studies nor philosophy in it.

Someone go on Indeed or any job site and see the "very good jobs" requiring a background in gender studies or Philosophy. Not saying it can't be done....good for you for escaping the trap. There's acting majors that are now major movie stars. Very good major choice for them.

50,000 plus full medical dental and stock options. With 6-7 years, an Operations or regional manager is in 6 figures.. Legitimately attainable by 30. And this is not knowing someone or getting lucky, its basic hard work and this could be a legitimate progression.

Operations manager, regional manager, Corporate offices....its a multi billion dollar international corporation...no where to go? Even if you don't pursue more....Just live at home as a manager and put the $200,000 in good stocks at 25....let it sit until 40(Apple, Mcdonalds, etc)
