Many doctors in developing countries have formal education in developed countries, usually European countries.

They may charge up to twice the rate that a colleague without those merits charge, but we're still talking about a couple of thousand dollars for a surgery, not dozens of thousands, and definitely not hundreds of thousands.

The doctor in that 60 Minutes piece went to medical school in the U.S. and worked as a surgeon at a hospital in Columbus Ohio for years before returning to his home in India.  The care the patients got was better than they would receive here for a fraction of the cost.

If you get really sick it's cheaper to just die.  Cut your family a break.

Many times it is the family that insists on doing "whatever it takes" to keep their family member alive, even when quality of life is essentially zero.  Nursing homes are filled with brain dead patients rely on a ventilator to breath for them and a feeding tube to deliver nutrition.  They are doomed to a life of incontinence, bedsores, and infections--all at a substantial cost.

The "death panels" of Obamacare was a big talking point but I think there is something to the idea of an objective third party that can determine that further medical care would not be in the best interest of the patient.  Family members are often times too involved to be able to let go, even when it's the best possible outcome.

Goomorrow,

I find it plain sad that these people have enough money for steroids, HGH and other pharmaciticals but need the public to help them with living. I just recently was on Twitter and someone retweeted a Porn Star's go fund me. Roxy Raye. These people are living high off the hog, vacations, Instagraming from beautiful hotels everywhere, showing their "weed" and when it all comes crashing down they have no funds.

How?

Madison University
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Nutritional Counseling

2002 – 2007

Madison University is a non-accredited distance learning college located in Gulfport, Mississippi. The state of Mississippi considers Madison an "unapproved" college.[1][2] Madison is also listed as an unaccredited and/or substandard institution by four other U.S. states.[3][4][5][6] According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, Madison University has been referred to as a diploma mill by the state of Oregon.[7]

D'oh!  I will never understand why anyone would choose to go to an unaccredited or a for-profit school (or both) when 95% of us live near an accredited junior college or state university. ::)

I always thought it was the opposite based on bills I received. When I payed cash with no insurance it was about a 50% "discount". When they know that insurance is paying for it and they will for sure get the money it seems to generally be more.

Both of you are correct. Insurance companies and Medicare or Medicaid only pay about one third, maybe one half of the posted (or half hidden would be a better way to describe it) official prices charged by the hospital. If you walk into a hospital without health insurance (which Obama tried to eliminate by requiring everybody to buy health insurance or face a penalty on taxes, but which Trump has since overruled), the hospital’s financial counselors will generally work with you to knock down the prices (for example, the 50 percent discount mentioned above). But there is no absolute guarantee of a discount in this scenario.

By the way, a policy that STOPS paying when you reach $500,000 seems very unusual. Obamacare tried to eliminate this type of fly by night policy, but Trump is trying to relax carrier rules in order to reduce premiums. Maybe some employers offer limited policies like this, but I thought they were prohibited from doing this. Not sure on that, but I would ask a lot of questions if someone tried to hit me up for charitable funds because their policy “ran out” like this.

I'm supposed to pay for people's college loans, universal income if you don't work, reparations, and free health care?  Nothing is government funded. It's all tax payer funded. It's basic life. You pay for your own shelter, food, car and health care. You take care of your own kids.

That sucks.

Now that the money's run out the docs and hospital say go die.

It's pretty fracked.

They got $500k and it's not enough?

Do the docs at least wave when they go by?

I thought the current law forbade medical caps.

Something else is going on.

“The current law bans annual dollar limits that all job-related plans and individual health insurance plans can put on most covered health benefits. Before the health care law, many health plans set an annual limit — a dollar limit on their yearly spending for your covered benefits.”

Hope all the steroids were worth it for Lance Dreher.

About 25% of young steroid users have clogged up arteries around their heart. At that age they don't think about their health and most assume they are invulnerable

Dumb, stupid and taking totally unneccesary risks imo

Hes 64 encountering these issues, a similar age to a lot of men that age, he must obviously need more than a few stents to run those sort of dollars. Good luck to him, but no doubt these issues have come on earlier due to his earlier use.

Because you actually have to go to class, study and test to pass an accredited college.  For a PHD you have to do a lot more.  With an unaccredited degree many times you simply send cash and get your degree.  Back in the 80's-90's Columbia Pacific University gave out hundreds of graduate degrees and many popular culture people got degrees there.  Remember John Gray (Men are from Mars, Women from Venus) the author?  If you sent $1,000 to CPU and wrote a book report as your thesis/dissertation you received a PHD or Master's of your choice.  Finally, the state of California shut them down.

Thanks to my military service and one other medical insurance program I've never had to pay for any operation, doctor visit, shots or prescriptions.

I was fully aware of my VA coverage but my civilian health care program was a mystery to me until some elderly lady came to our front door and had me sign some papers over my dumb objections ... so now I also have free United Health Care coverage with which I have another primary care doc (for a 'second opinion') and free Lyft or Uber rides to and from any med appointment.

Just last week I called a UHC representative and was informed that I had one of the BEST med insurance programs available in the US and there was no way to make it any better as it was aleady the best available.

UHC also sent me one of those wrist watches similar to an Apple watch so I can count the number of steps I take each day, heart rate, etc. ... plus a shitload of non-prescription drugstore supplies every three months.

If I get hit by a speeding truck while walking across the freeway ... I'll never have to pay one cent out of pocket.

Anyone on this board have similar med coverage?

IRON, Not that I'm aware of.

Since I've been fully covrered, I've had no need to educate myself on any Obama plan nor Trump plan and have absolutely no idea which plan covers indigent US citizens .... or those individuals who enter the US illegally  ... but I'm sure that such a plan does exist within the 'Land of the free... and the home of the brave.

But if you are serious I'll be glad to check with a UHC rep  and inquire if such a plan is avaiable.

Stunt,

You said it is a "free" healthcare program.  How is it free?

Is it free because you are poor?

Is it Medicare?

You qualify for Medicare don't you?

Is it part of the VA?

IRON, Pls reall that I'm pretty damn dumb when it comes to med insurance programs as throughout my lifetime I've never had to use it (until recently) and never did abuse it.

But yes, you are correct that UHC is 'part' of medicare ... but what's of interest is the fact that I never had any large med care payments withdrawn from any pay-check I've ever received (at least not large enough to cause me any concern).... but now it's my understanding that it costs you and others $200 - $300 plus each month.

But even now I gotta admit that I don't know too much about med insurance and its monthly fee, but I have been told that I have the best plan available and am not an 'indigent', but have been called worse

 VA is really appreciated also.

And Nope! I sure as hell don't qualify for any low income med plan.
