Please can one of our GetBig experts explain exactly what the heck happened here..?

Growing up in the UK countryside, shotguns normally expelled pellets..?

I suspect he was trying to smash the window with the butt of the shotty and accidentally blasted himself. Can't see him shooting the window and it blasting back and killing him.

In the USA you can get shotgun shells with a single slug in them.

It's a odd one, but an updated version of the story includes this -

'They all got out of the car and ran so the guy decided to damage the car with the back of the gun.

'As he was hitting the windows the gun went off and he shot himself - that's what we've been told.'

My guess is he was downward butt stroking the windshield, the gun goes off, and it's at an angle where the pellets in the shot spread hit him, but also ricochet off the car's windshield.

Larger buckshot or steel shot might be able to ricochet back with enough force to kill you at point blank distances, but that would be some tremendously bad luck.

Darwin Award Nominee 2019 right there

Jeezus - what's the purpose of those?  You guys have much bigger wildlife than us, so is it for bears maybe..?  Anyone ever fired one of those?  What's the recoil like..?

Yeah, I suppose having looked at the charts some of the larger shots are around 9mm, so bullet sized... sheesh...

Thanks guys  8)

bear, moose, elk, etc at short distances. though slugs also have a further range.

also for self defense. usually in home defense shotgun one would make the first shell bird/buckshot and the second shell a slug. repeat this cycle twice and then anything loaded after that is all slugs. so first shot wounds the enemy, if they keep coming you put em down for good with a slug.

what an idiot to have your finger on or anywhere near the trigger. I mean MAYBE the force on the butt was enough to cause the firing pin strike the shell but I highly doubt that.

Yeah, Moose and Elk are pretty big too, hadn't thought of that

The home defense thing is pretty clever too, but I can't imagine how loud it must be when you have to discharge something substantial indoors!  :o

After posting, some dust blew away in my mind and I half remembered what Lance Henriksen(sp?) was toting in Hard Target - would that be classed as a shotgun though?  Probably not...

The Hard Target pistol is a .45/70 Thompson Center model, this should give you an idea of the gun and the cartridges -

.

They're mostly used for big game and long range target shooting in a variety of calibers. They do make regular sized shotguns and a .45 Long Colt model pistol that can fire .410 shotgun shells. If it was smooth bore and any other gauge it would fall afoul of our short barreled shotgun laws and require a special tax be paid, plus some extra legal paperwork. But since it has a rifled barrel and is technically manufactured as a pistol, they begrudgingly let the fact that it can chamber .410s go.

Also you might ask "Why don't they just make rifled bore pistols that can fire 20, 16, 14, 12 guage shells too?", Well because any pistol (and many rifles) over .50 caliber are considered - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destructive_device .

Thanks man  8)  I find most threads on firearms pretty fascinating and end up watching YouTube reviews of the various items you guys describe - for instance, I had to Google that - came up with the Taurus Judge and S&W Governor - home defense vids - cool stuff thanks for posting
