Do you think one has more of a social stigma than the other?

Smoking. It’s annoying to walk through a gaggle of smokers just before you enter a building from the parking lot

Socially , not personally.   Do you think more people would ostracize someone for being a smoker or an open PED user?

A lot of things that have social stigmas are usually due to people being ignorant of them or falling for bad information. The amount of youngsters openly smoking here in the states is huge. Most people don't have lifestyles where they can just not give a fuck about what uninformed people think. Those group is going to inevitably include family, employers and co-workers, etc.

I don't really hate smoking.

I light up from time to time.

Sure passive smoke gets a little unpleasant.

But I don't hate and ostracize smokers like the brainwashed idiots.

Steroids carries a greater social stigma due to the legality and misrepresented side effects, but:

Who cares what the average fuck thinks about gear..........they have no clue.

If the general public knew more about steroids and the bodybuilding world, do you think their opinions would go up or down?

Someone doing roids doesn’t bother me, as I usually won’t know. But smoking is horrible and I hate smelling it or having my clothes stink.

This is sort of what I'm getting at. It is aggressively unpleasant to be around someone who smokes. The smoking stinks and they retain that odor. It is potentially lethal to the smoker's health and there is evidence to suggest it is detrimental to those around them. There are no health benefits to smoking nicotine based cigarettes. Even though there are places you can't smoke and half of all smokers are in a constant state of trying to quit, people are pretty open about smoking. Walking down almost any block in my city, you can see at least one person smoking.

As for steroids, there are health risks, but there are plenty of benefits, too. People who use performance enhancing drugs are usually pretty dodgy about it. Even when talking to people familiar with fitness. If they admit to use, they are always barely using or just using maintenance trt doses or they built up a solid base before using. And people familiar with fitness are pretty dismissive and critical or people who they suspect of using steroids. For the most part, it is not offensive just to be in the presence of someone who uses steroids.

So, it's interesting how the two are perceived. I'm not sure steroids are more stigmatized, but I think when comparing their pros and cons, it's interesting how they are perceived.

Cigs. In comparison to steroids, the social stigma associated with blazing up has fallen dramatically, which is also interesting.

What does that mean? The social stigma for smoking pot? Explain if you will.

Don't people-or at least Europeans- combine the two?  Tobacco acts in a synergistic way with the cannabis to enhance its effects.

Americans ,who generally are a somewhat more puritanical lot, like to to take their weed "pure" and seem to look down on users who mix the two.

By Society;  Steroids is simply  cheating, narcissism, insecurity etc...   but the biggest Stigma (very well earned) is the obsession with "the attention seekers" from some steroids users, they can't stop talking/posting "ballz to the walls training BS, warrior on a quest, this is what I take this is where I shop etc …..and of coruse, always avoiding the elephant in the damn room …

Smoking has always been  part of the culture, society,  smoking just bothers if is second hand smoke that you don't want part of .

Steroids are associated with over the top muscleheads and that has a very negative connotation. But moderate steroid usage leading to an above average but not overdone physique? I don't anyone would bat an eyelash. Or even know for that matter.

Smoking, on the other hand, has a very low threshold where people get turned off. Secondhand smoke affects everyone nearby - simply from the smell alone. So smoking is infinitely worse than steroid use I think.

Bill O'Reilly once ranted against "steroids, creatine and all 'these other narcotics.'"

Yes.  He called them NARCOTICS.

He is a blowhard and extreme egotist, but he is not stupid.  He is actually quite intelligent, and I applaud some of his efforts (like pushing for Jessica's Law).

However, like most journalists l know, he is intellectually lazy.  They don't know a damn thing about PEDs beyond what they remember from the late eighties steroid witch hunt.

Almost anyone who is in slightly above average shape  will get asked if they use steroids. People who are into the scene are probably more likely to make the accusation.

Steroids don't just affect appearance, they affect performance, too and there is probably more stigma regarding that.

The point isn't whether or not you can keep it a secret but the fact that most who use feel compelled to do so in the first place.

You seriously don't see  how pot has been seriously destigmatized over the last few decades. In the 90s, Clinton had to come up with some bullshit about not inhaling while he was campaigning. No candidate would even bother these days. The fact that there are medical uses for marijuana helped it go mainstream, but people just casually talk about recreational use without judging or expecting judgement now. Old people openly talk about using it. I remember there was this pic of Charlize Theron back in the early 2000s smoking an apple bong and no one would just flat out say it because it was sort of scandalous to say it about someone in legitimate society. Just earlier this year, she did an interview where she talked about smoking up on occasion. Working successful actress with kids who likes to smoke weed on occasion.
