The Bolsheviks were very hostile towards religion following on from the revolution. Many churches were destroyed or converted into town halls/museums. They gradually began becoming more accepting of religion during WWII in order to help galvanize patriotism and their previously harsh treatment of religious institutions softened.
Russia now heavily promotes Orthodoxy and connect it with national identity. Putin understands the importance of faith in the public consciousness.
