The amount of dumb fuckss in this thread is hilarious!! Heavy benching is NOT bad for your shoulders, heavy benches with your shitty exercise form IS!!!  Thumb less grip may feel good but so does sniffing glue for some idiots, doesn't mean it's good for you!!! You don't need a spotter if you bench in a power rack with safety bars set up.

bench press puts the shoulder in its correct range of motion, delts are for pushing away from the body, overhead pressing will fuck up your shoulders because its not a natural range of motion..

I was benching alone in the basement one night and got caught under 275 (7-8 rep). It was on my chest and I got a surge of adrenalin from the fear, I managed to turn the bar a little to the side and spin out from under it, my heart was pounding afterwards.

Funny story...

My 2nd day in prison (when I got transfered to the actual prison and out of reception) I went down to the weight room before morning count (each unit had its own small weight room. Some better equipped then others. Some had a single universal machine with a set of those old square adjustable dbs, some had actual free weights... In addition to the full weight-pile in the rec-area with power racks, flat, Dec, Inc benches, etc etc..)..

... Anyways, this one had a flat bench/free weights. I just got back from breakfast and go down expecting to get a quick shoulder and tricep pump. Open the door and turn on the light and there's a dude laying on the flat bench. I look around and think "wtf is this dude doing lying on the bench in the dark?". Thought I might've walked in on him jerking off or something and turn to the right. I realize he hadn't made a sound, and glance over and see the bar is loaded (found out later it was 365) & on the floor behind the bench like he was doing deadlifts.. Do a double take and see the pool of gooey blood allll over the floor/carpet beneith the bench and bar, look up and see his head hanging off the end/back of the bench with his spine poking up/out through his spine and realize "this ain't my problem. I didn't see anything." And go back up to my room/cell till count time.

Sure enough. 30min later, like 15mins before scheduled count, we have an emergency-count. Then another. Then we're on lockdown till almost lunch.

Later on find out the dude found out he was getting transfered to Texas to testify against some people on a Fed case, and he was likely gonna be stabbed there because of it. Didn't recognize the guy when he was on the bench, but found out I was playing cards with the dude the day before and I think he only had like a 4-5yr sentence.. anyways, he'd loaded up the bar with 3 plates and a quarter each side, unracked it off the back and guillotined himself. Brutal way to go.

Needless to say, we lost the "on-unit" exercise rooms and they got turned into "study rooms" by the next week.

Not only the thumb less grip but he could have passed out straining to complete the lift. Since he was doing half reps he was using more weight than he could handle. Another previous comment was that he could have blown out a shoulder or a pec. I rarely bench anymore but I use safety racks so if I fail it's not crushing me.

I actually love the short ROM. Perfect bodybuilding style reps. As long as he gets his diet together and has a solid posing routine he should do well in his bodybuilding debut. Probably a light heavy I'm guessing.

When benching without a spot, bench without collars. If the weight slips, tip the bar. It makes a hell of a racket on the basement floor. Anyone in the house is going to hear it and come running. I know, I did this once a very long time ago and look, I'm still here. These days, I wouldn't think of benching without the aid of a machine. My hands are my weakest point and my grip is all but nonexistent, thanks to osteoarthritis.

Good advices.

No need to bench with collars when training in most cases.

A safety rack will give a false sense of confidence, they can be useless at times. A power rack/cage, with the correct setting of pins would be suggested if benching alone.

When benching good spotter's can be of great value . Average spotters can be marginal at best. Bad spotters, a strong potential of a crippling accident. Having two spotter's, per side, might be suggested. Three spotter's in cases where extreme weigh is used.  If you casually ask some guy walking by for a spot, than he or you may have a problem real soon.

Avoid collar's if you must bench alone. Can develop balance and insure that one arm is not doing most of the work. Most important, tilting the bar will allow plates to slide off if your pinned under that bar.

Suggest using chalk (bag, block, powder...or some other stick'em) if the bar is resting on the heel of the hands. For some, a thumbless/false/neutral position (it's not a grip) reduces stress on the wrist and forearms when into serious benching.

I did that when I was younger, only I put 80 lbs on the bar (cement weights) and put any extra weights outside the collars. That way, I could "train to failure", dump the extra plates, and press 80 lbs back to the uprights.

When the neighbors downstairs complained about the noise, I simply put the couch cushions around the bench. This allowed me to dump the weights minus the noise. I NEVER USED a thumbless grip. Even as a 16-year-old, I knew better than that.

The thumb-less grip feels better for a full ROM and a deep stretch.. .. but that does not help build the chest and screws up the shoulders. Heavy Benching in general is horrible for  he shoulders anyways, and there is no evidence that it builds the chest better than inclines, declines or machines. so Incline all the way for me for my basic free weight strength builder.

Its called suicide grip for a reason. RIP. to a fellow brother in iron.

I also don't see the sense in benching anything over 405. Unless you are just a massive dude like Thor where 405 is like 225 for the regular guy.

Benches work great, if you do it, "collar-to-collar". I call them, "Leroys", based on the late great Hall of Famer, Leroy Colbert.

Of course, back in the day, the uprights were narrow; so you could actually touch the edges of the bar. See the late great Serge Nubert (another Hall of Famer) below.
