Changes that will impact legal immigrants (2020)
« on: January 12, 2020, 12:52:23 PM »
It might surprise some here that I agree with most of these changes to immigration laws.

1. CHANGES IN CITIZENSHIP TEST, AND NEW REASONS FOR DENIALS
Immigrants must prove they can read, write and speak basic English, and have essential knowledge of U.S. history and government. Honestly, I thought these requirements already existed.

2. MORE IMMIGRATION FORMS AVAILABLE FOR ONLINE FILING
Why does it seem like government is often behind the curve? One of these is the application to register permanent residence. Also applications for employment, applying for travel documents, a petition for a non-immigrant worker and asylum applications.

3. The list of unlawful behaviors is expanded to include 15 items. The are obvious violations of the law, which should leave no doubt as to what is required to immigrate to the U.S.

4. Restrictions on public assistance on Individuals who receive public benefits longer than 12 months, within any 36-month period. No more forever free rides.

One thing I disagree with is denying asylum to applicants who fail to apply for asylum in countries traveled through to get to the U.S.

Why is that?

This applies mainly to people immigrating from South America where many countries are unsafe shit holes overrun by gangs, which is why a lot of people are leaving their homelands in the first place. Canadian's don't have this problem and those flying to the U.S. generally are less likely to have stopovers in unsafe countries. It doesn't make sense to immigrate to a country that's no better or even worse off than the country you are leaving.

Travel warnings issued by the State Department in 2019:

Venezuela - Level 4: Do Not Travel
Brazil- Level 2 exercise increased caution
Peru - level 2 exercise increased caution
Ecuador - Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution
Guyana - Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution
Colombia - Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

Where is Baltimore on that list, and why the hell are we spending money and resources we don't have on people from far away if we can't even solve our own problems?
