I was never a basketball fan but the one impression that Kobe made on me was when he was drafted into the NBA at 17 years old. By the time someone gets to the NBA they have had to have beaten out tens of thousands of others vying for the one spot. And that's for a bench warmer. Forget about being a superstar. They are the truly gifted ones with the discipline to nurture it. But at 17 years old, hanging with the most elite gifted fully grown-up men, really made an impression on me. It confirmed the belief I had developed through personal experience and just following athletes that achieved greatness. That's it's a lie that champions are made and not born. They are born then made. As Arthur James said "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear." (I know he was not the originator but it's when I first heard it). At 17 years old he simply didn't live long enough to train as long and as hard as the ones he was competing with and against. He was born with a gift and no amount of hard training can compete with that if you don't have the innate talent. Same with Lebron James.
