There is something about Ray's physique that is unappealing.  I don't know if he was too blocky or narrow but I never thought he deserved the Olympia.  He looked like a midget even though he was average height for a bodybuilder at the time.

He was stubby.

I did watch that show along with Lee Haney and Cory Everson's shows.  Shawn was actually pretty good although it was annoying that he acted like he didn't know anything when asking questions to the other bodybuilders.  He did seem stubby next to them.

We were fortunate to have bodybuilding shows like American Muscle and those shows mentioned above.  Once ESPN dumped bodybuilding no other network picked it up.  I still think the IFBB and NPC should find a way to put contests on t.v. to expand their fan base.  There are so many cable and satellite channels now surely they could strike a deal with someone and the supplement companies could buy the advertising so that wouldn't be a problem.

Somebody else probably mentioned it in this thread, but people should also take into account that for 9 years of his professional career, Shawn took the entire year to focus on one bodybuilding show. Dexter would’ve probably won more than one Sandow if he did the same. I think I’d prefer to look like Ray although he’s a midge (Dex is too), but Dexter is cooler in my book and had a more impressive bodybuilding career in terms of both longevity and not only competing in multiple shows year in and year out but also winning them. In 2008, he won the Arnold, 3 Grand Prix shows, and the Olympia. That’s impressive.

yup it’s a lot like comparing the late 1980s-late 1990s in boxing you had Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, Riddick Bowe, Ray Mercer, Razor Ruddock, Micheal Moorer, Tim Witherspoon, Chris Byrd, Ike Ibbeabichi, David Tua, even that nut job Andrew Golota could bang (below the belt or not) and throw in a couple of old school war horses in George foremen and Larry Holmes although they were past it still very competitive even over 40 and there were others....that level of competition compared too this era in the heavyweight division imo is no competition.

Like the little shit or not shawn Ray went up against the toughest era in bodybuilding and all things considered he was always in the mix for top honours against the best of the best.

I don’t think a prime dexter would beat a prime shawn Ray it’s 50/50 scenario going bye dexters criteria because he outweighed Ray bye 20-25lbs he’d “smoke him” maybe he would maybe he wouldn’t he can say that but the facts are he didn’t beat him just like Coleman never beat Yates, facts are facts you can only beat who’s infront of you @ the moment your living in not 5 years later into the future everything else is “speculation”
 
On the flip side Dexter Jackson is written into bodybuilding folklore winning the mr Olympia something shawn never done again you can only beat who’s in front of you @ that moment in time and the fact that dexter Jackson won the Olympia against sub par competition in 2008 isn’t his fault.

Dexter is not afraid to get down and dirty. This is not good for Shawn. Shawn likes to be controversial. But Dexter sounds like he is willing to humiliate Shawn in front of the bodybuilding world.

Shawn is SOOO fucking overrated it's beyond laughable. Excellent physique absolutely. a great bodybuilder? NO by no fucking metric. Dex won more contests in 2008 alone than Shawn won in his entire career!!! now factor in Dex won more shows in 2004 than Shawn did his entire career and again in 2013 and in 2016. Dex has 29 wins I believe with an Sandow and Shawn won 2 fucking contests  You can argue who had the better physique but under no circumstances can you argue who was the superior bodybuilder. And I personally believe Dex would beat Shawn at their respective bests.


Dexter was 100% spot-on about everything with the exception of let the 90s guys compete today and then would have trouble! The 90s guys who couldn't win were " full " and just couldn't come dialed in at that weight. So they lost to the guys who could. And it's all irrelevant because no one is weighing people on-stage. The 1990s is the highwater mark for professional bodybuilding specifically because of the size , shape and conditioning.

Dex was also right about Shawn creating buzz to keep his name relevant , He started that Digital Muscle Media looking to create controversy and views. Shawn is very good as promoting himself to be something more than what he was which was a mediocre bodybuilder. 

You must remember that Shawn Ray competed in an era, where a lot of bodybuilders just went from Olympia to Olympia. Back then (and until 2003), placing top 10 at the O qualified you for the next year's O.

Ray had already won two of the other top three contests (IronMan Invitational and the Arnold Classic). And he was set, money-wise, with his Weider contract. So, in his mind, the only thing left winning the Olympia. That's also why he turned down a gig with the WBF (especially with his buddy, Troy Zuccolotto, being offered $50,000 more per year, despite his not having competed as a pro vs. Ray's 3rd-place finish at the 1990 Olympia).

Dexter does have the one title that Ray does not: Mr. Olympia. Unlike Ray, Dex knocked the defending champion off his perch, when that defending champion was considerably off the mark.

Few 1- 6 are usually easy to spot especially as the judging rounds & comparison progress.
Trying to judge / evaluate who should & shouldn't of won or placed where is Extremely
Difficult from pics - and a little better from Quality videos, Nothing like the same as being
Sat front & centre where the judges sit.
Now I’m not going to say there aren’t some odd results/ placings, as a judge for NABBA
I can categorically State I’ve never been approached by anybody to place a competitor
In a certain place or show them favouritism & I’ve not been aware of any other judges
Being approached.
I’ve certainly seen & found some decisions not to my liking / judging only that why there’s
A panel of judges & a head judge to make sure the judging is fair anyone vastly out of
Sync with the others would be asked why their seeing things so differently & could be
Replaced.

I respect your point of view. But, no way am I buying Dorian Yates, winning the 1994 Mr. Olympia with straight firsts across the board.

If there were any Olympia that should have gone to a Shawn Ray, it's that one.
