You asked this:
I explained why a grocery store is, in all likelihood, dirtier than a gym.

Sorry.

I see.  We can all agree now, that grocery stores are dirtier than gyms.  Thank you, I will take extra precautions when shopping for groceries.

It’s funny, after I wrote this my wife and myself went to grocery store (Ralph’s in my area) and really started observing how people act in the stores and observing the cleanliness of the stores. Floors are clean but not sure of their cleaning schedules (2, 3, 4x per day🤷‍♂️) then going to the freezer section, seeing how many people open and close the freezer doors, how often do people pick up a product, look at the label then put it back, is many adults, kids and children put their hands on the outside of the freezer or refrigerated section of say the meat section. I’m sure we can all add to this but I think you see what I’m saying.

Gym are full of germs, no doubt but their much more manageable to keep clean than a store.

Keep in mind gyms have bathrooms, the amount of urine and fecal matter on the floors, weights and machines is scary. The perspiration on the machines and benches doesn't help matters. Yes, grocery stores are not the most sanitary of places but no comparison to a gym. Just my opinion is all.

Let us also not forget what Tom Prince was rumored to do in gym bathrooms -

started with kidney problems-non gym related, next was an infection necessitating two hip replacement surgeries, next in the litany was open heart surgery caused by an infection that ate away a heart valve. i'm months and maybe years away from seeing the light at the end of the tunnel if there is one. the sad part was i was having some of my best workouts up until the problems hit. thanks for your concern pellius i remember you from ironage yet.

Jeeze, talk about getting knocked down over and over. Stay strong, my friend, it's your only option. Man, the randomness of life is so disconcerting. People that don't give a second thought to their health skate through life forever and then some just get hit over and over again.

Okay, what is your point?  That we should close supermarkets?   ???

People seem to be focussing on touch, here yet, most of the effort is in distancing yourself away from people's airborne contaminants.  It isn't hard to wash your hands.  I think we all got the memo on that.

If 1.5-2m is the rule for someone at steady respiration, what is it for someone who is huffing and puffing and moving around, possibly creating currents?

If supermarkets are dirtier than gyms, which would you take?  Briefly coexist a supermarket with someone who is afflicted or spend an hour in the same gym as someone who is equally so?  I'll admit, if you walk past someone in an aisle, you're effectively spending quite a bit of time in their wake, so there is an argument to taking the gym - but you're in the gym for a lot longer and you really should only be going to a shop once a week, if that.

I'm not even remotely concerned about touch.  Touch is something you can control.  Touching a freezer door is moot - wash your hands as soon as you leave, before you get in your car.  That's gone.

Some people would argue that a grocery store which sells food and other necessary items is more essential than a gym where you work off the calories you picked up with the food you bought and ate.

When shopping, wear disposable gloves and dispose of them along with whatever germs they picked up when you leave the store.

The “essential” shouldn’t really have anything to do with what’s the cleanest. Groceries you can’t live without in most places. Gyms - not really essential to life.
Coach - I agree with you most of the time and I know it sux, but I can’t agree here. Fortunately I am able to work from home - and I bet MANY more businesses will be moving to that model. With AR coming - there just won’t be a need for most offices.

I've been training differently - but still training.  Heavy Ruck marches, boot camp type stuff, etc.

No, can’t remember which reporter it was that actually suggested that. Just saying stores are dirtier than most gyms

So what .. hospitals are even dirtier than both.

I will say, it is a total joke to see the types of businesses considered essential.  Either do it right with a proper lockdown or keep everything open.  Half-assed measures like what we're doing are gonna kill the economy without saving many additional lives.

Finally we see signs of life.

Im very tempted to drive 3 hours each way to workout here. Need to see what equipment they have. But still!

California gym owner is re-opening, says shelter-in-place order is unconstitutional

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The owner of several gyms in the Sacramento plans to re-open Friday despite the governor’s stay-at-home orders.

Sean Covell, who owns three "Fitness System" franchises, announced the decision to his members this week.

His attorney, Brian Chavez-Ochoa, believes the restrictions imposed by the government during the pandemic, are a violation of the Constitution.

"This is government overreach, and under the First, the Fifth and the 14th amendments of the United States Constitution, we have a constitutional right to do exactly what we’re doing,” he said.

Ochoa Chavez said that all three locations will be in compliance with the CDC's social distancing guidelines -- and he says that the gyms will be cleaned every hour.

Earlier this week, Gov. Gavin Newsom said that gyms will be among the last businesses to get the all-clear in reopening, and he didn't give a date as to when California would be ready for this to happen.

The gym owner is not the first to defy shelter-in-place orders, which have stopped the spread of coronavirus but which have also crippled the economy.

A Vacaville hair stylist reopened this week saying she'd rather get a $1,000 citation rather than suffer the $15,000 in lost revenue she's already experienced. Bars and other salons have also decided to reopen. Protesters took to the streets in Sacramento, demanding the governor ease up and let people go back to work, despite the fact that California has been successful in flattening the curve and avoiding huge death tolls with its strict quarantine measures.

This week, the Bay Area Council released a survey saying that 71 percent of the businesses surveyed wanted to be back at work in the next month.

Stay at home orders will be lifted in Missouri Monday May 4th. I'll finally get to back to the gym.
