Live updates: Reopening grinds to a halt as coronavirus hospitalizations surge in Sun Belt states

As novel coronavirus cases continue to surge across the Sun Belt, the optimism surrounding ambitious reopening plans is swiftly dissipating. Arizona delayed plans to reopen public schools and ordered bars, gyms, movie theaters and water parks to close on Monday, as the state marked yet another day of record hospitalizations. In Los Angeles County, which is at risk of running out of hospital beds in the next two to three weeks, residents are being urged to “hunker down” in their homes and avoid all unnecessary trips.
Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s top infectious-disease expert, is set to testify Tuesday alongside other senior officials before the Senate’s health committee. A surge in new infections has jeopardized some school reopening plans. Prominent conservatives including Scott Gottlieb, a former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, have called on schools to open their doors, even as case numbers rise in more than half the states. If schools and child-care centers do not reopen in the fall, American workers could face a child-care crisis.
Nearly 10.3 million coronavirus cases have been detected worldwide, with roughly 2.6 million infections reported in the United States. At least 124,000 people have died of covid-19 in the United States, and the global death count is hovering near 505,000.

Hospitalizations for what? Article fails to provide context for numbers. This means COVID hospitalizations are down and you're being lied to

Dr. Anthony Fauci says U.S. coronavirus outbreak is ‘going to be very disturbing,’ could top 100,000 new cases a day

The U.S. is “not in total control” of the coronavirus pandemic and daily new cases could surpass 100,000 new infections per day if the outbreak continues at its current pace, White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said Tuesday.

The country is now reporting nearly 40,000 new coronavirus cases every day — almost double from about 22,800 in mid-May — driven largely by outbreaks in a number of states across the South and West. Fauci said about 50% of all new cases are coming from four states: Florida, California, Texas and Arizona.

“I can’t make an accurate prediction but it’s going to be very disturbing,” Fauci told senators in a hearing held by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. “We are now having 40-plus-thousand new cases a day. I would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 a day if this does not turn around, and so I am very concerned.”

The number of new cases reported each day in the U.S. is now outpacing April, when the virus rocked Washington state and parts of the Northeast, especially the New York City metropolitan area.

The U.S. averaged 39,750 new cases per day over the past seven days as of Monday, according to a CNBC analysis of data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. That average has risen by more than 40% compared with a week ago. As of Tuesday morning, the seven-day average of daily new cases reported rose by more than 5% week over week in 40 states, according to the data.

Fuck him. Someone shoot that incompetent FUCKHEAD.

Enough with the panic. Same clowns say that mass riots and protests over several weeks had nothing to do with increased cases or transmission. Really? It's all the fault of those peoe going to church and drinking beer on their deck.

Good Lord.

Most likely..... Unless they move it to Rhode Island.  The only state In the country where people Still wears mask , keep the distance and the virus is practically gone.

Sad news today, even Oregon which was not doing great since the reopening I now joined most  all of the other states which are back in the crisis pandemic mode. Governor Brown may be forced to shut us down again. This possibility was likely discussed during the recent emergency legislative session.

Interesting way to make a deduction. An article misses a beat and it means COVID-19 hospitalizations are down. I wish.

One week ago, this was a headline in the Washington Post:

Seven states report highest coronavirus hospitalizations since pandemic began

But then there is this posted on the 28th: Governor Cuomo Announces Lowest COVID-19 Deaths and Hospitalizations in New York Since the Pandemic Began

Looks like it depends on where you are.

I believe it.  I've known 3 married couples where 1 spouse has tested positive and the other spouse never got the virus.  Very strange.

Not really.

If one of them had a common cold corona virus at some point in the past (usually as a kid/teen) then a T-cell immune response could take care of sarscov2.

It’s a classic bait and switch. Much in the same way global warming morphed into climate change, deaths from Covid are morphing into cases.

And the "new ice age" many predicted before that, and the new "new ice age" some now predict will start in 2030.

Not really. This type of virus infects and takes out the most susceptible and then doesn't have anywhere else to go as it doesn't mutate like flu.

It will eventually disappear or become about as lethal as a cold. Someone who understood the mechanisms could have predicted all this months ago.

It only looks like a conspiracy if you own too much tin foil  ;D

It’s absolutely hilarious. Going about my Fortress business and folks everywhere wearing fancy-coloured face masks. Driving. Alone. Walking. With not another human in sight.

Pass another think-for-himself-er and give each other the knowing look that says, “These humans are pathetic ‘tards.”

It’s all bloody madness.

No wonder the civilized world is collapsing, what with so many ridiculous people mucking about.

Fuck the world.

Hail and kill.

One can only imagine how much worse this pandemic would be were this not so.

The new coronavirus turned out to have a reproductive number somewhere between two and three. It’s impossible to pin down an exact figure, since people’s behavior can make it easier or harder for the virus to spread. By going into lockdown, for instance, Massachusetts drove its reproductive number down from 2.2 at the beginning of March to 1 by the end of the month; it’s now at 0.74.

Live updates: U.S. infections surged nearly 50 percent in June, and July 4 celebrations are looming

The number of coronavirus infections in the United States swelled enormously last month as states tried to relax quarantine rules and reopen their economies. More than 800,000 new cases were reported in June — led by Florida, Arizona Texas and California — bringing the nation’s officially reported total to just over 2.6 million.

Health officials are nervously eyeing the July 4 holiday weekend amid the surge. Though some beaches, including in South Florida and Los Angeles, have been closed, other oceanfront destinations have not. “We’re going to see several hundred thousand people come down here regardless of the recommendations that have come out,” Galveston Island Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis told the Houston-based news station KHOU this week.

Health experts are pleading with Americans to take the pandemic seriously before it’s too late. The director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, Ashish K. Jha., said on “Good Morning America” Wednesday that every state should require people to wear masks. And Tom Freiden, the former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wrote in an op-ed for Fox News that “the more we fight among ourselves, the more the virus divides and conquers us.”

At least 44,474 new coronavirus cases were reported in the United States on Tuesday, the second-highest total since the start of the pandemic, according to data collected by The Washington Post. More than 10.5 million cases have been detected worldwide.

More testing = more positive tests.

This will have to run through the population at some point so this is great news.

Knowing what we know now and how much we are still being lied to....these numbers are great news.
