He was focused on having 3 vehicles and a $60k car stereo. Can’t pity the fool.

I'm not sure if you were exaggerating there, but if I recall correctly, his vehicle stereo actually did cost him $30,000.  Shoot, it may have been $60,000, but $30K is what first came to my mind.

Also, when you consider that this was in the year 2000...with inflation it would have been even more.

I actually reviewed one of Flex Wheeler's DVD's for my Ironage bodybuilding website [Bodybuilding Pro], and wrote that it didn't seem like he planned for the future, and he e-mailed me about it.  He was offended.  I then called Flex, and we talked for about an hour.  He was a nice guy to me, and I was happy to talk to him...but sadly, I think I was right about him being poor about future planning.

I just hope he can get through his health issues, put the syringes away, and just focus on health and being around for his kids.  The man has nothing to prove at this point, and he is only 55 this year.  Way too young to go, IMO.

I’m pretty sure it was 60K. Ridiculous, right? I believe it was in the BFTO 2000 video

I just searched and they must’ve taken down the video. It wasn’t BFTO 2000 but whatever year it was, he said it. I believe it was in the back of the Excursion. Here’s an old post of mine when the video available. Mits probably had Youtube take it down  :P

Don’t forget the $60K car stereo. Such a joke. Can’t pity this fool

@50:00 mark. Oh brother!

That comeback for flex was what did him in, imo. Nothing to prove yet gets back on boatloads of drugs at 50+ years old with underlying medical conditions. Yeah, very smart choice

Wow, haha.  You might be right about that.  I can't remember if he said he spent $30K on the car and another $30K on the stereo, or something.  He may have broken two numbers down, but I think you are right about $60K.  And if it wasn't the 2000 BFTO, it would have been the 1999 BFTO, I think.

I suspect he could have bought a little rental house with that cash - just to give himself a $500 a month income for life, or something like that.

I wonder if he's still juicing or doing anything else, or if his health problems now are just the result of years of pro bodybuilding.

If there is one plus side - the new guys coming up will know the risks of top tier bodybuilding.  Back when Flex was coming up, his era of guys were basically guinea pigs.  John Romano once asked "Where are the bodies?"  Well...we have the bodies now.  :-\

I'm with you on that. At the very least he would have had a half dozen or so extra years of decent health before shit hit the fan.

Wasn’t this clown fine for many years after his transplant and coincidentally starts falling apart after his comeback?

Yup, pretty stupid.  Flex saw the attention that Leverone got during his comeback and he wanted the same thing.

From what I understand transplants usually last about 10 years

I'd guess he would have needed the money and exposure. You can bet the IFBB wrote him a cheque to get him on stage too

Transplant from a living donor can last for much longer.

If that article is true, flex is dealing with Phantom limb pain and for what it's worth, it is not deadly, mostly annoying and likely in need of good neuropathic medications, if not narcotics.

Strangely, the article mentions that Ronnie Coleman is offering his assistance. Not sure if serious, but isn't Ronnie Coleman a quadriplegic?

Flex will certainly live!

What do you treat phantom pain with.....imaginary meds and virtual therapy?

What's next?  A pulled muscle from his returned muscle/oil suit?

How lucky this guy is to have been in the spotlight for a while (albeit through drug abuse), kill his kidneys, and then receive a successful transplant?.....a new lease on life.  Then to fuck that life up again.

Maybe the third time is a charm for him and he straightens out.

Meanwhile Shawn Ray is living well, same age as flex, but got out and never looked back. Sure he forgets his wallet on occasions when eating out in restaurants, but he’s one of the smarter ones

Flex was the biggest douche at venice in the 90s, his behaviour and aggression was way out of line, and whilst many could have predicted what he was doing back then was going to end here, His demise does not make me feel any better, what he and others at the time were doing was the reason I retired from the sport, I considered the price to be paid was to great no matter what the reward. But still its sad to see him in this position, but i doubt he would feel the same sympathy for anyone, guy was an egomaniac.

The same thing happened to a friend of mine who had one of his legs removed.  I'm pretty sure it was his full right leg, but I may be remembering that wrong, as it was some years back now.

Too bad about that - I would hate to lose a limb, or lose any of my senses.

It's pain, a miserable situation for him but it won't kill him.....

Seems his vascular issues (which would have killed him) have not returned.

Phantom pain is pretty common once people lose a body part. The worst is when they try to use the missing body part.

For example I know plenty of people without a brain who think they have one.

LOL!!!!  Oh man...$60,000 on car stereo equipment?  :-\

I think had Flex played his cards right, he would have enough savings to be in a much better spot now.  Even though he e-mailed me because he was offended that I wrote that he didn't save his money, I think I was right about that.

Did he even buy health insurance?  Maybe it halfway makes sense...you're making $200,000+ in sponsor dollars, getting free supplements, a free gym membership - possibly even free gear - and just thinking it will last forever.
