I have to admit, that a lot of the chicks doing this exercise in the gym have a great ass.

I tried once and almost crushed my dick.

Need the pad built for it.

However, seeing videos of that dude in this thread certainly does make it look fucking stupid.

That said,


Taking a somewhat more serious look at the movement. Bending the knees causes the rectus femoris to stretch, which limits hip extension which also stretches the RF. So you’re not gonna get as good of a range of motion from this exercise as you would from doing a hip extension movement in a standing position where the rectus femoris would be contracted at the knees and allowing for a greater extension of the hips

In my estimation, sprinting or simply squeezing at the top of back squats would be better and certainly less clunky.

Exercise is effective and a safe way to learn to contract/fire the ass muscles.

It's not uncommon for lifters to compensate for a lack of this  with other muscles in lifts like the squat etc.

This can reteach.

It's not the be all, end all, just another tool in the box.

I see people actually using the hamstring curl machine to try to do these.  Wedging themselves in backwards so the heel pad is on their upper thighs and hunching away.

I've seen a few at my gym use the leg extension machine the same way.

Yup I've done this to warm up for squats.

My gym is plagued with both guys and girls doing this dumb exercise. They look like they're having sex with the bar.

Dumbest exercise ever. Can't imagine devoting time to this exercise.

It's a fad which will fade when people realize they are wrecking their backs for the sake of building bigger glutes. It's part of the current obsession people, including bodybuilders have with ginormous striated butts.

I've done hip thrusts at home with no added weight. That's good enough for me. But then, I have a relatively flat ass....so what!

Learned to do them from my physical therapist when I was having issues with my lower back, (degenerative disk disease). It's one of the core exercises designed to strengthen the muscles that help support the spine.

Hip Thrusts involve squeezing your glutes and lifting hips up toward the ceiling. They engage the glutes, hamstrings, core, lower back, abdominals, obliques, and hip flexors.

Never, have I done them at the gym or with added weight. Not planning on it either.

it's like a rotator cuff exercise - use as a warm-up to stay healthy and strong.  Not a muscle builder, stick to traditional exercises for that.

Doesn't need much weight though, maybe 25-45lbs.  Idiots like to load the weight up bc it looks impressive or something, but there's pretty much zero lever arm at the hip so the load on the muscle is small
